DULUTH, Minn. – St. Scholastica right-hander Dallas Miller pitched 7.1 innings of two-hit ball to help the Saints to a 5-2 win over the UW-Superior baseball team in non-conference play at Wade Stadium Monday.
Â
Miller kept the Yellowjackets off balance all day, striking out 12 while carrying a no-hitter two outs into the fifth inning. He struck out the side in the first and fourth innings, walked two and hit two batters.
Â
The Saints (3-2) got all the offense they needed in the bottom of the first inning off of UWS starter
Elliot Danhoff (Gladstone, Mich./Gladstone), taking a 3-0 lead. The first four batters of the inning reached safely as Matt Tautges and Mitchell Novak, singled and Luke Schemenauer walked to load the bases.
Â
Cody Venske coaxed a second consecutive walk, forcing in Tautges from third for a 1-0 lead. A fielder's choice to third base by Jake Schelonka scored Novak for the second run. After Schelonka stole second, Zach Harding lifted a fly ball to center that chased Schemenauer in from third to make it 3-0.
Â
St. Scholastica added a run in the bottom of the third when Alex Haapajoki lashed a double down the left-field line, scoring Schelonka who reached on a dropped fly ball in right by
Isaac Grothe (East Bethel, Minn./St. Francis) with one out.
Â
Isaac Fugere (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) broke up the no-hit bid with a single to right in the fifth, but Grothe struck out on three pitches to end the inning. UWS fanned 13 times in the contest.
Â
The 'Jackets finally got to Miller (1-1), knocking him out of the game in the eighth. Grothe started the inning with a five-pitch walk, but was erased on a
Ben Rhodes (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) fielder's choice. Jerry Gooley came on in relief of Miller and gave up a single to center field by
Brandon Rolf (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area), putting runners on first and second with one out.
Â
Next up,
Bryce Flanagan (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) flied out to center, moving the runners up, and then, with
Nick Shea (Pengilly, Minn./Greenway) on as a pinch hitter, Gooley uncorked a wild pitch to bring Rhodes in and make it 4-1. Shea, though, ended the frame with a bouncer to first base.
Â
The Saints got the run back in their half of the inning off of
Kaleb Beane (Tallahassee, Fla./Leon), who relieved
Brenden Kruger (Cottage Grove, Minn./Hastings), on a one-out fielder's choice by Novak.
Â
Superior started a one-out rally in the ninth as
Sam McNosky (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle) singled to center field off of Tautges and
Nick Zezulka (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony Village) reached on an error at second base. A Fugere ground ball moved the runners to second and third and a dropped third strike gave UWS life, allowing McNosky to scamper home from third, but Tautges induced Rhodes to hit a fly to right field to end the game.
Â
Danhoff worked five innings and fell to 1-2 on the year. He allowed four runs, three earned, six walks and four hits while throwing 119 pitches.
Â
Rolf went 2-for-4, extending his hitting streak to 10 with his fifth multiple-hit game of the season. Haapajoki was 2-for-3 with two doubles, a walk and RBI for CSS.
Â
UWS (7-6) is back in action at St. Olaf in a doubleheader at Mark Almli Field in Northfield, Minn., on Saturday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
