ASHLAND, Wis. – Scott Wilson (Ladybank, Scotland/Bell Baxter) scored two goals to lift the UW-Superior men's soccer team to a 5-1 season-opening, non-conference win over Northland at Ponzio Stadium Tuesday.
Wilson, a senior defender, scored the first goal of the match in the 24th minute with an assist from
Blake Perry (Anoka, Minn./Anoka), and added a penalty-kick goal in the 39th to make it 3-0.
Miguel Ocampo (St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park) struck for the game winner with an assist by Perry in the 30th minute. Ocampo then assisted on
Protus Babaya's (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) goal just after halftime that made it 4-0. That goal came in Babaya's UWS debut following sitting out 2019 after transferring from Division II Colorado State Pueblo.
Blake Perry (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) gave the Yellowjackets a 5-0 lead off of an assist by
Blake Hanson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) in the 59th minute.
Jonah Evans got Northland on the scoreboard eight minutes later. He was assisted on the play by Jimmy Thach.
The match featured eight cards with Northland's Yabkal Demelash drawing a straight red with less than four minutes to play.
Superior outshot the LumberJacks, 27-9, and, 17-5, in shots on target and had eight corner kicks. Jamie Collvil started in the Northland goal, making 10 saves prior to giving way to Garren Aberth for the final eight minutes.Â
Ulrik Lager (Vollen, Norway/Asker VGS) and
Payton Anderson (Red Wing, Minn./Red Wing) split time in the UWS nets with Lager earning the start. He did not face any shots on target. Anderson made four saves in the second half.
The 'Jackets begin UMAC play Saturday at NBC Spartan Sports Complex on Saturday against Martin Luther. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
