SUPERIOR, Wis. – The fourth-seeded UW-Superior women's hockey team broke the game open with four goals in the second period on its way to a 6-2 victory over No. 5 Northland in the first round of the WIAC tournament at Wessman Arena Monday afternoon.

Four players registered multiple-point games for the Yellowjackets, who dominated play after giving up an early first-period goal.

With the win, the Yellowjackets (4-4-0) advance to face top-seeded UW-Eau Claire in a two-game semifinal series Wednesday and Friday at Hobbs Ice Arena in Eau Claire.Â

Jenna Curtis (Webster, Wis./Webster) paced the UWS offense with a goal and two assists while classmate
Amber Heidenreich (Phillips, Wis./Hayward) potted two goals, junior
Jenna Byfuglien (Roseau, Minn./Roseau) and sophomore
Hannah Magnusson (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) each added a goal and an assist.Â

Northland's Mahteya Dumelie gave the LumberJills the early lead at 5:29 of the first on an assist from Karadyn Kiviaho before the 'Jackets scored the next five goals to assert control. After Heidenreich scored at 11:33 of the first with a Byfuglien helper to knot the game at 1-1,
Amanda Sergent (Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines) and Magnusson scored 12 seconds apart in the second period for a 3-1 advantage.

Sergent's tally at 7:33 from Magnusson and
Tessa Jorde (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln), was her fourth of the season. Magnusson's at 7:45, assisted by
Jamie Davison (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna) and Curtis, was her second.Â

Kaylee Wood (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park) connected with Curtis 33 seconds later to make it 4-1, and Heidenreich converted on the power play with just 7.6 seconds remaining in the second period.
Megan Dulong (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) and Curtis assisted on the third goal of the year for Heidenreich.

Kiviaho cut into the Superior lead with an unassisted marker 3:14 into the third, and Byfuglien added an empty netter at 18:01 from
C.C. Hayes (Fort Frances, Ontario/Fort Frances) to put the game away.

The 'Jackets outshot Northland, 59-16, and dominated in the faceoff circle, winning 44-of-63 draws on the day.Â

McKenzie Whalen (East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks) earned the win in net for the 'Jackets, making 14 saves. Soleil Archambeault took the loss for the 'Jills, making 53 saves.
