SUPERIOR, Wis. – Watching the Yellowjacket women's soccer match Saturday with Bethany Lutheran, you just had the feeling it was going to come eventually. If they just kept punching away at the Vikings' goal, they would get on the scoreboard.
That's exactly how it went down.
After numerous chances to jump in front, the Yellowjackets finally broke through 10:07 to play in regulation to defeat Bethany Lutheran 1-0 at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
With the win, the Yellowjackets remain unbeaten and are off to their first 3-0 start since 2006. They sit in a first-place tie in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference with St. Scholastica. Both teams are a perfect 3-0 in conference action.
Simply put, the Yellowjackets dominated the match. They controlled the play territorially, and had an 11-1 advantage in shots attempted through the first 45 minutes. The 'Jackets had multiple chances to break the scoreless tie, but came up empty each time.
They continued to dominate in the second half, outshooting the Vikings 7-0, but again had difficulty finding the back of the net.
Annah Schussman (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji), who was tied for the team goal lead with three, had multiple point-blank chances, but she was unable to get the Yellowjackets on the board.
Then with time ticking away in regulation, the Yellowjackets got the break they needed. Schussman and
Claire Smith (Hayward, Wis./Hayward) worked the ball into the box and a loose ball near the left post got to
Olivia Harding (Phillips, Wis./Phillips), and the sophomore made no mistake, scoring her first collegiate goal to make it 1-0 in the 90th minute.
From there, the Yellowjacket defense, which had been suffocating all day and rarely allowed the Vikings to cross midfield, took over. The one marker was enough to push the Yellowjackets to the victory.
Morgan Philliber (Apple Valley, Minn./Edina) made her third start in a row Saturday in what turned out to be an uneventful match. She faced just one shot, and that came 23 minutes into the contest. She earned her third shutout in a row with one save.
Niya Wilson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) led the Yellowjackets with five shots attempted and two shots on goal.
The Yellowjackets will be back home Wednesday, April 14 when they host Crown College in UMAC play. The opening kick is set for 1:00 p.m. at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
