Strong Northwestern Pitching Beats Yellowjackets in Sweep

Story Links

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The UW-Superior baseball team dropped a doubleheader at NBC Spartan Sports Complex Wednesday, falling, 5-0 and 6-1.

Northwestern used a pair of complete games from pitchers Owen Boerema in the first game and Bryce Crabb in the second to keep the Yellowjackets' offense at bay. UWS managed just eight hits on the day while striking out 16 times.

The Eagles scored in each of the first three innings of the opener to stake themselves to a 4-0 lead. Keegan Vercoe drove Sam Peterson in from first with a one-out triple to the right-center field gap to get on the scoreboard. Mason Skrede hit a single up the middle off Superior starter Joey Barker (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) in the second, later scoring on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. In the third, Peterson led off with a single and stole second with one out. Crabb followed with a single through the left side, putting runners on the corners.

Crabb stole second before Aaron Severson singled to center, plating Peterson. Then, with Wyatt Morrell batting, Crabb and Severson executed a double steal, with Crabb swiping home for the 4-0 lead.

The Eagles had eight stolen bases in the first game and four more in the second.

UNW added a run in the top of the seventh on a one-out home run by Vercoe over the fence in right field off of reliever Jack Barnett (Jordan, Minn./Jordan).

Boerma improved to 2-0 on the mound for the Eagles, fanning 12 while surrendering just three hits and three walks on the day, throwing 118 pitches. The 'Jackets' offense consisted of a first-inning bunt single by Brandon Rolf (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area), a sixth-inning single up the middle from Mike Rodriguez (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) and a ninth-inning single through the left side by Ryan Castaneda (San Pedro, Calif./Junipero Serra).

Barker fell to 0-2 in the loss. He went five innings and scattered six hits, four walks and four earned runs with three strikeouts. Barnett allowed two hits with three strikeouts in four innings.

Vercoe and Crabb each collected two hits in the first game for the visitors.

Andrew Simonson led off the second game with a single to center field on the first pitch from Bryce Flanagan (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd). Simonson stole second and moved to third on a Peterson flyout. Vercoe brought Simonson home with a groundball to the right side.

UWS tied the game with a Rolf solo homer to right-center field with one out, but Superior was unable to build a rally as Crabb induced groundouts from Christian Garcia (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) and Castaneda to end the inning.

Northwestern retook the lead in the top of the sixth with a two-run double to right center from Severson with one out. Two batters later, Morrell doubled down the left-field line, scoring Severson, making it 4-1.

The Eagles added runs in the seventh and ninth for the final margin.

Crabb moved to 4-3 on the year with his complete-game victory. He gave up five hits and one walk, hitting two batters and balking once. Flanagan fell to 1-2 in the loss, scattering four runs on four hits and four walks with six strikeouts before giving way to David Dibble (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) and Brenden Kruger (Cottage Grove, Minn./Hastings).

Garcia, Alex Aguilar (Simi Valley, Calif./Westlake ), Ben Rhodes (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) and Isaac Grothe (East Bethel, Minn./St. Francis) picked up the other four UWS hits in the nightcap.

Morrell paced the Eagles' offense, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI in game two.

UNW improved to 14-7 and 2-0 in the UMAC with the sweep.

UWS (9-11, 2-2) returns to action at Bethany Lutheran in a Saturday doubleheader at 1:30 p.m.
