MORRIS, Minn. – It was bound to happen.
The Yellowjacket women's soccer team's perfect season, in one way, came to an end Saturday, as it allowed a goal for the first time this season. The goal snapped the Yellowjackets' shutout streak at 430:08, easily the longest such streak in program history.
However, perfection remained intact in another way, and frankly, the most important way.
Yellowjacket freshman
Kaitlyn Raisch (Hopkins, Minn./Hopkins) scored her second goal in as many games with just under 15 minutes to play, fueling the 'Jackets to a 2-1 win at Minnesota Morris, keeping them unbeaten on the season.
With the win, the Yellowjackets improve to 5-0 on the year, marking the first time in program history a team opened a season with five straight wins. And with all five wins coming in conference play, the Yellowjackets sit atop the conference standings with three conference contests remaining in the 2021 season.
Saturday followed a familiar script to the previous four Superior games, with the Yellowjackets controlling the bulk of the play and holding a big advantage in shots. What was different, however, is that things were even early.
Both the Yellowjackets and Cougars had three shots attempted and one shot on goal in the opening half. Fortunately for the Yellowjackets, their shot found the back of the net.
Annah Schussman (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) got things started for the Yellowjackets, scoring from a sharp angle in the right side of the box to put the Yellowjackets in front, 1-0. The goal was the fourth of the year for the Yellowjacket captain, and came in the 12th minute on an assist from
Niya Wilson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior).
It stayed that way until the second half, when the Yellowjackets began to exert their will on the Cougars. Still, they were unable to get any breathing room and Morris drew even.
Sam Tate evened the score for the Cougars, scoring on a one-touch at 70:08, breaking the Yellowjacket shutout streak and tying it 1-1.
Just over five minutes later, however, the Yellowjackets took the lead for good. Raisch, who scored her first collegiate goal in Wednesday's home win over Crown, got the game winner Saturday, getting her own rebound after her original shot was blocked, giving the Yellowjackets the 2-1 win.
As even as the first half was, the second half was not, despite the score. The Yellowjackets attempted 12 shots to Morris' three, including a 6-2 edge in shots on goal in the frame. For the match, the Yellowjackets outshot Morris 8-3.
Morgan Philliber (Apple Valley, Minn./Edina) started in goal for the Yellowjackets improved to 5-0 on the year. She made two saves in the match.
The Yellowjackets will be back in action Wednesday, April 21 when they travel to St. Paul, Minnesota to take on Northwestern. The opening kick is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Northwestern's Reynolds Field.
