DULUTH, Minn. – St. Scholastica swept the UW-Superior softball team, winning both games of its Upper Midwest Athletic Conference doubleheader, 6-3, at Kenwood Field on Wednesday.
Â
The Yellowjackets opened a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game one before the Saints, who are receiving votes in the latest NFCA Division III top 25 poll, chipped away with runs in bottom of the first, second and fifth innings to tie the game.Â
Â
CSS then used back-to-back home runs with one out in the sixth by Toni Bishop and Josie Fourre to take the lead. Alex Wurzer later drew a walk with the bases loaded, forcing in Grace Hadlich with two out for the final margin.
Â
Bryton Kukowski (Duluth, Minn./Hermantown) plated both
Tiffany Kirk (McHenry, Ill./McHenry East) and
Tayler Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) with a two-out single up the middle in the first inning for the 3-0 lead. Kraemer reached with a bunt single and stole second. Kirk coaxed a walk from CSS hurler Haley Rosenthal and moved up on a wild pitch that also scored
Kaela Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights).
Â
Aislind Dail worked another bases-loaded walk, scoring Hadlich, in the bottom of the first to get the Saints on the board at 3-1. Hadlich then singled to right-center field with two outs, scoring Fourre from third after she stole base and moved up on a throwing error.
Â
Rosenthal threw a complete game, scattering six hits, three earned runs and three walks with four strikeouts, to improve to 12-2 on the year for the Saints.
Tayler Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) went the distance for the Yellowjackets, surrendering 10 hits and six earned runs with four walks and two strikeouts. Kraemer also went 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and stolen base.

Hadlich was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI for CSS.
Â
Kirk knotted game two 1-1 with a sacrifice fly with one out in the top of third. The first three batters in the inning –
Kaileigh Miller (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior),
Kaela Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) and
Tayler Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) – reached with singles. After a strikeout, Kirk's fly to center field scored Miller from third.
Â
Bishop hit her second homer of the day, a three-run shot to center in the bottom of fourth, to help the Saints regain the lead at 4-1. CSS tacked on two more in the sixth with RBI base hits by Nicole Anders and Hadlich, respectively.
Â
UWS mounted a two-out rally in the seventh when
Kaela Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) smacked a double to left center which plated
Jessica Jacobson (Sturgeon Bay, Wis./Southern Door), who led off the inning with a single.
Tayler Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) followed her sister with a run-scoring single to left, but Olivia Howe (13-1) struck out
Olivia Bancroft-Hart (Cambria, Wis./Cambria-Friesland) to end the game.
Â
Howe allowed eight hits and two earned runs in her complete-game effort, fanning seven with just one walk.
Malania Madill (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge) posted a complete game of her own, surrendering eight hits and six earned. She struck out three and walked one, falling to 4-4 on the season.
Â
The Kraemers recorded two hits and an RBI apiece in game two at the top of the lineup. Kukowski,
Davriana Horvath (Esko, Minn./Esko) and Miller picked up the 'Jackets' other three safeties.
Â
Rosenthal and Bishop each tallied two of St. Scholastica's eight hits in the nightcap.
