DULUTH, Minn. – Freshman left fielder
Jessica Jacobson (Sturgeon Bay, Wis./Southern Door) went 4-for-4 with a go-ahead two-run single in the sixth inning and the game-winning RBI double in the eighth as the UW-Superior softball team knocked off 23rd-ranked St. Scholastica, 5-4, to earn a two-game sweep on the first day of the UMAC tournament at Kenwood Field.
Jacobson ripped a double to left field with two out, scoring
Olivia Bancroft-Hart (Cambria, Wis./Cambria-Friesland) and
Tayler Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) shut down the top-seeded Saints in the bottom of the frame, stranding the tying run on second base, for the victory in extra innings.
The Yellowjackets move on to face Northwestern Friday at noon in a winners'-bracket game. The Eagles topped Bethany Lutheran, 5-2, earlier in the day.
Tayler Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) (12-7) followed her 141-pitch complete-game victory over Northland with 135-pitch effort to pick up her second victory of the day. She scattered 10 hits, four earned runs and three walks against the Saints with six strikeouts, including getting Josie Fourre swinging to slam the door in the eighth.
Jacobson gave Superior (19-13) its first lead of the day in the top of the sixth when she lined a single to left, scoring
Tiffany Kirk (McHenry, Ill./McHenry East) and Bancroft-Hart. Mady Peterson misplayed the ball in left on the play, allowing
Bryton Kukowski (Duluth, Minn./Hermantown) to motor all the way around the bases from first for a 4-3 UWS lead.
Heidi Stewart tied for St. Scholastica the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the inning with one-out single through the left side, but
Tayler Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) limited the damage to just one, pitching out of trouble with another strikeout of Fourre and pop up to end the inning.
Kaileigh Miller (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) started the seventh with a single but
Kaela Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) lined into a double play and
Tayler Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) field out to quell the momentum. The Saints mounted a threat in the bottom half, putting their first two on via a walk and base hit. UWS, though, found a way out of it as Nicole Anders was called out for leaving early trying to steal third. Grace Hadlich then hit into a force out at second before
Tayler Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) fanned Toni Bishop to send the game to extras.
The Saints (32-7) jumped on top with two runs in the first on an RBI triple from Olivia Howe and a run-scoring hit by Hadlich. UWS cut the deficit in half in the third inning on a Bancroft-Hart single up the middle, scoring
Kaela Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights), who singled with two out.
Kari Breuer restored the two-run lead for CSS with a RBI single to left with one out in the bottom of the fifth that scored Peterson prior to Jacobson's go-ahead single in the sixth.
Bancroft-Hart was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one driven in joining Jacobson as the other Yellowjacket with multiple hits. Superior outhit CSS as a team, 11-10, with six different players hitting safely.
Howe fell to 16-4 in the circle for the Saints, yielding three earned runs and two walks in a 122-pitch complete game. Howe and Hadlich each were 2-for-4 at the plate in the loss.
