WAVERLY, Iowa – The sixth-seeded UW-Superior softball team's season came to a close with a 9-1 elimination-game loss in five innings to No. 5-seed Webster in the NCAA Waverly regional at Lynes Field on Friday.
Webster (21-11) jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a three-run home run to left field by Alyssa McWilliams in the third inning and scored five runs without recording an out in the fifth for the final margin.
The Gorloks' Abby Burroughs singled home Taylor Jackson in the second inning after Jackson reached on an error to open the scoring, and both Sidney Holtz and Paige Thomas collected base hits to set the stage for the homer.
Kaela Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) got the Yellowjackets on the scoreboard with a single up the middle that plated pinch runner
Amanda Kishish (St. Francis, Minn./St. Francis) to pull her team to within three at 4-1 in the top of the fifth.
Marley Burd (Glendale, Ariz./Centennial) started the rally, lacing a one-out single down the left-field line, before
Hailee Melgeorge (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) worked a four-pitch walk from Webster hurler Morgan Parrish. After a strikeout, Kraemer's single ended the day for Parrish in favor of Kirbie Mendenhall.
Tayler Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) greeted Mendenhall with a single to shortshtop to load the bases but
Olivia Bancroft-Hart (Cambria, Wis./Cambria-Friesland) stuck out swinging to end the threat.
Thomas reached on an error to open the Webster fifth followed by a McWilliams single and steal. Sheyla Iniguez then came up with a single to center to make it 5-1. Iniguez swiped second and Jackson singled to third to load the bases before Jaelin Holdaway coaxed a walk to push the lead to five.
Kaelyn Kearney and Reese Waggoner had consecutive singles to close out the game.
Tayler Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) surrendered 10 hits and seven earned runs in her 17th complete game of the season. She walked three and struck out one in falling to 15-10 overall. Parrish improved to 5-4 with 4.2 innings of four-hit ball. She struck out three and walked two.
Burd went 2-for-2 with a double and
Tayler Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) had a pair of singles in three at-bats.
Thomas and McWilliams tallied two hits each to pace the Gorloks' 10-hit attack.
The Yellowjackets end the season at 22-16 overall.
