DULUTH, Minn. – It has been a season for the ages for the Yellowjacket women's soccer team. Among the accomplishments in 2021 are the best start to a season in program history (5-0-0), the highest post-season seeding in program history (No. 2), and a second Upper Midwest Athletic Conference championship match appearance. A win Saturday would bring the first conference title of any kind in program history.
Standing in the way was the College of St. Scholastica, the defending conference champions. The Saints, who entered Saturday as the tournament's No. 1 seed, were one of just two teams to defeat the Yellowjackets during the regular season – 2-1 at UW-Superior April 27. On the other side, the Yellowjackets were one of just two teams to score a goal on the Saints this season.
On this day, the Saints weren't willing to give up their grip on the title just yet. St. Schoalstica got a big day from its biggest player in its final game in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (they will join the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference next year) on the way to a 4-0 in the UMAC championship match in Duluth.
St. Scholastica's Morgan Friday, who had 24 goals heading into the match, figured into all of the offense Saturday, assisting on the matches first goal and then providing all of the insurance, scoring the next three to put things out of reach.
Kaiya Quam scored the eventual game-winning goal at 17:27 of the match. Friday added her first goal in the 33rd minute and the Saints led 2-0 at the half. Friday then scored at 52:09 and again at 62:52 to close out the scoring.
Morgan Philliber (Apple Valley, Minn./Edina) got the start in goal for the Yellowjackets and was busy, making seven saves on 11 shots on goal. It was a great year in goal for Philliber, who started every match and played every minute of the season. She finishes the campaign with a record of 7-3-0.
Claire Smith (Hayward, Wis./Hayward) and
Lindrey Schendel (Firestone, Colo./Skyline) each had one shot on goal to lead the Yellowjackets.
The Yellowjackets finish the season with a record of 7-3-0.
