ASHLAND, Wis. – The UW-Superior women's soccer team scored twice in each half and played strong defense for a 4-0 win over Northland at Ponzio Stadium on Saturday.
Sophomore
Niya Wilson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) continued her torrid scoring pace bagging her fifth and sixth goals of the season while classmate
Allison Alessi (Shakopee, Minn./Prior Lake) tallied her first of the season and freshman
Halle Carlson (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown) notched her first collegiate goal.
The Yellowjackets dominated from start to finish, outshooting Northland (1-3-1, 0-1-0 UMAC), 35-3, overall and 22-1 in shots on target on the day to open Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play. Goalkeepers
Jenna Lang (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) and
Morgan Philliber (Apple Valley, Minn./Edina) combined for Superior's first clean sheet of the season as each played 45 minutes.
Wilson opened the scoring in the 20th minute off of a pass from Alessi, putting it past Northland's Elysabeth Lough high into the right corner of the net. Along with Alessi's 35th-minute goal which made it 2-0 off of a corner kick, she also collected her team-leading second and third assists of the season.
Five minutes into the second half, Carlson scored from just inside the 18-yard box. Wilson then put match out of reach with a 52nd-minute tally, assisted by senior
Annah Schussman (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji).
Philliber turned away the LumberJills' only attempt on goal of the day, a Flynn LeMaire shot in the 46th minute.
UWS improved to 3-3-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the league with the win. Lang picked up her second victory in the net. Lough (1-3-1) took the loss, making 18 saves in the Northland goal.
