Yellowjackets Sweep Bethany Lutheran, Move to 2-0 in UMAC Play

MANKATO, Minn. – Junior Alexie Pryd (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove Senior) put down a match-high 19 kills, adding 16 assists, to lead the UW-Superior volleyball team to its second consecutive sweep to open UMAC play Friday over Bethany Lutheran at North Gym.

The Yellowjackets won, 25-18, 25-17, 25-20, in just 73 minutes, improving to 4-8 overall on the season.

Pryd hit .279 with just seven errors on 43 swings to pace a Superior attack that collected 43 kills and hit .194 as a team.

Junior Cassy Teff (Foley, Minn./Foley) recorded a double-double of 15 assists and 12 digs, while senior Megan Holz (Savage, Minn./Burnsville Senior) directed the offense with a team-best 20 assists in the win.

Knotted at 8-8 in the first set, the Yellowjackets used a 7-1 run to take a 15-9 advantage, forcing a Vikings' timeout. Kills by Jordyn O'Brien (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior), Autumn Bremness (Cadott, Wis./Cadott) and Pryd highlighted the stretch.

Bethany Lutheran was able to pull to within one at 18-17, but UWS put the set away, winning seven of the next eight points.

Superior led wire-to-wire in the second set, registering 14 kills and a team-best .205 set hitting percentage in the stanza. Pryd closed it with a service ace, one of her team-leading three on the night.

Bethany (2-11, 0-2 UMAC) claimed the first two points of the third set before the 'Jackets reeled off six straight; a run punctuated with a block from freshman Rilie Kupka (Eagan, Minn./Burnsville Senior). UWS held a 4-3 edge in blocks for the match.

The Vikings got back to within 6-4, but Superior carried the play through the rest of the set to seal the match.

Alexis Morsching led BLC with nine kills and Maddi Wendland had 15 assists.

UWS next heads to Martin Luther at 11:30 a.m., on Saturday prior to playing at St. Catherine at 6 p.m.
