SUPERIOR, Wis. – Following an overtime thriller Wednesday where the Yellowjackets fell to Augsburg, the men's soccer team was back in action on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in Superior, looking for its first victory of the season as it hosted Concordia College.
The wait for that first win is going to have to be a little longer.
The Yellowjackets scored the equalizer early in the second half, but Concordia countered with a pair of goals six minutes apart later in the half to pick up a 3-1 win over the Yellowjackets at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
With the loss, the Yellowjackets (0-2-0, 0-0-0 UMAC) open the season with consecutive losses for the first time since 2018. After that 0-2-0 start, however, the Yellowjackets would go on a 19-1-1 tear and reach the second round of the NCAA tournament.
It was a back-and-forth first half with a lot of the play taking place in the middle of the field. Each team had chances to break the ice, but defense and goalkeeping kept it scoreless.
That changed with 3:08 to go in the first half when Concordia converted following a Yellowjacket offside, turning the ball back the other way and going on the rush, completing with T.J. Seidel scoring his first of the season to make it 1-0.
It didn't take long for the Yellowjackets to answer however. Less than two minutes into the second half they drew even when
Phillip Eriksen (Skjetten, Norway/Lorenskog) scored his first of the year and celebrated with a backflip to even things at 1-1. The goal came in the 47th minute.
Blake Perry (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) earned the assist on the goal.
Concordia took the lead for good at the 60:28 mark when Telvin Vah scored from the right side of the box to make it 2-1. Vah added another goal at 66:26 on an assist from Seidel, making the final score 3-1.
Each team finished the match with 11 shots on goal. Concordia attempted 22 shots in the match, compared to 15 for the Yellowjackets.
Payton Anderson (Red Wing, Minn./Red Wing) got the start in goal for the Yellowjackets and made five saves in the first half before giving way to
Alex Paredes (Mequon, Wis./Homestead), who made three saves on five shots in the second half. Eric Torres made 10 saves in goal for Concordia.
The Yellowjackets will take to the road for the first time this season Wednesday, Sept. 8 when they travel to Bethel for a non-conference match. The opening kick is set for 4:00 p.m. in Arden Hills, Minn.
