Hot Shooting from Deep Not Enough as ‘Jackets Fall at Northwestern

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The UW-Superior women's basketball team shot nearly 54 percent from 3-point range in the first half to keep itself in the game, but Northwestern came away with a 62-52 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference victory at the Ericksen Center on Friday.

The Yellowjackets went 7-for-13 from distance before halftime, scoring 21 of their 29 first-half points from beyond the arc. UWS led, 18-14, through the first quarter and held a 21-19 edge when freshman Elise Besonen (Ewen, Mich./Ewen-Trout Creek) hit Superior's fifth trey of the half with 7:22 to play in it.

Northwestern (8-5, 3-1 UMAC) took control as the second period progressed, opening a seven-point margin when Taylor Schuck converted a layup to make it 28-21 Eagles with 4:27 remaining the half. An Allie Zimmer (Waconia, Minn./Waconia) triple with 2:35 before the break, assisted by Sam Parendo (Proctor, Minn./Proctor), pulled UWS to within 30-27, but UNW led, 34-29, heading into the second half.

Kelsea Lund gave the Eagles their first double-digit advantage of the day at 42-31 as streaked to the basket for fastbreak layup with 4:29 on the clock in the third quarter. Another bucket from Lexi Hagen made it a 13-point lead on the next possession.

Parendo hit one of two free throws with 1:13 remaining to cut the deficit to 58-52, giving her team a chance, but UNW iced the game at the line with four straight makes.

Freshman Makenna Guden (Edgar, Wis./Edgar) led UWS with 11 points in 27 minutes off the bench. She shot 2-for-3 from distance while grabbing five rebounds and one steal. Junior Mady Sanders (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) and freshman Chloe Peterson (Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson) scored eight points apiece. Peterson added a game-high-tying four steals and two blocked shots.

Northwestern put three players in double figures with Lund leading all scorers with 17 points. Hailey Paup scored 12 points and Megan Roberts tallied 10 and a game-best eight rebounds.

UWS (3-11, 2-3 UMAC) travels to face North Central Saturday. Game time at Clark-Danielson Gymnasium in Minneapolis is set for 3 p.m.
