Yellowjackets 6-0 in UMAC for First Time since 2018 with Comeback Victory at NCU

MINNEAPOLIS -- Senior setter Cassy Teff (Foley, Minn./Foley) recorded her fourth triple-double of the season as the UW-Superior volleyball team topped North Central, 3-1, at Clark Danielson-Gymnasium on Friday.

With the win, the Yellowjackets improve to 10-8 overall and climb to 6-0 in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play for the first time since 2018. That team finished 20-12 overall and 14-2 in the league.

UWS was forced to rally Friday after dropping the opening set to North Central (7-5, 2-4), 25-21. Superior bounced back in a big way to close out the match 25-19, 25-8 and 25-16 over the final three sets. Teff paced the comeback with 12 kills, 21 assists and 10 digs for her 11th career triple-double. Sophomore Maiana Stark (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) added a team-high 13 kills, hitting .290, while senior Alexie Pryd (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove Senior) contributed 12 kills and 19 digs.

Freshman Colleen Claude (Centuria, Wis./Homeschool) chipped in with a double-double of 20 assists and 13 digs and sophomore Jenna Anderson (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) had 30 digs.

UWS hit .212 for the match with 52 kills, including a blistering .591 mark in the third set with 14 winners. The 'Jackets added 17 kills in the fourth set, hitting .261 in that stanza to seal the match. Conversely, UWS limited North Central to just .117 from he floor with 39 kills and 19 errors in 171 attacks on the night.

After Stark tied the first set at 21-21 with a kill, assisted by Teff, the Rams ran off four consecutive points to take a 1-0 lead in the match. UWS, though, used a 7-0 stretch in the middle of the second set to take a 14-9 lead. That skein featured kills by Kaylin Plautz (Elk River, Minn./Elk River), Stark, a Claude service ace and a Stark and Plautz block. Plautz finished with a match-high five blocks.

An ace from Hailey Atwood (Big Lake, Minn./Big Lake) and an NCU error pushed the lead to 17-11 as the Rams never got closer than three points the rest of the way.

UWS bolted to a 16-4 advantage in the third set, cruising to a 17-point win to take the lead in the contest. The Yellowjackets again gave themselves a big cushion in the fourth set -- this time 11-2. The Rams battled back to make it 18-12 with a Makayla Krohnberg kill, but UWS won five of the next six points, and later put the match away with consecutive kills from Stark and Teff.

Cara Pence led all players with 14 kills and Grace Brigson dished out a match-high 29 assists for North Central.

Superior is back in action Saturday at 1 p.m., taking on fourth-ranked Northwestern at the Ericksen Center in St. Paul, Minn.
