DUBUQUE, Iowa -- Fifteenth-ranked Loras scored six goals in the first half and went on for a 7-1 victory over the UW-Superior women's soccer team in the opening round of the NCAA championship at Rock Bowl Saturday.
The Duhawks (17-0-3) scored twice in the first eight minutes before sophomore
Mya Holmquist (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo) cut the deficit in half in the ninth minute. Loras, however, put the match away with the final five tallies to end the Yellowjackets' second straight NCAA tournament run and season at 15-4-4 overall.
Holmquist's team-leading 21st goal of the season came at the 8:22 mark, unassisted, when classmate
Ava Giswold's (Duluth, Minn./Proctor) cross deflected off of several defenders and came to Holmquist. Her shot from the top of the 18-yard box beat Loras goalkeeper Kyndal Kells into the top left of he net.
Ryleigh O'Brien scored four goals for Loras, with markers in the eighth, 21st, 37th, 38th and 59th minutes. The Duhawks were also credited with an own goal in the 28th minute that glanced off of
Tori Vosburg (Cloquet, Minn./Esko) and into the net.
Bella Talbot opened scoring with a goal in the second minute, assisted by O'Brien.
Sophomore goalie
Jenna Lang (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) played all 90 minutes in the UWS net, making seven saves, taking the loss to end her season at 12-3-2 overall. The Duhawks outshot Superior 25-7 overall and 13-2 in shots on target. Kells earned the win for Loras, making one save, in 71:53. Megan Wick played the final 18:07.
