ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – Junior
T.J. Moberg's (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) fadeaway jumpshot at the buzzer caught glass but nothing else and Bethel escaped the UW-Superior men's basketball team's challenge with a 77-76 non-conference victory at the Robertson Center on Saturday.
Â
In a game that featured 17 lead changes and 10 tie scores, neither team led by more than seven points the entire day with junior
J'Vaun Walker (Rosharon, Texas/Manvel) scoring a game-high 23 points on 8-of-9 shooting, with five rebounds and four steals while senior
Josef Fahrenholtz (Chatfield, Minn./Chatfield) added 17 points, six rebounds, three blocks and two steals.
Â
Walker gave the Yellowjackets a 72-71 edge on a steal and layup with 3:03 to play, but, after a UWS timeout, the Royals' Avery Mast knocked down a 3-pointer to take the lead back.Â
Â
Walker responded with a jumper to knot the game at 74-74 prior to a Tommy Jensen triple. Walker then rebounded a
Carter Brown (Eau Claire, Wis./Regis Catholic) miss and put it back up and in with 1:33 left, to shave the deficit to one with what was the final basket of the game as Bethel (1-3) played strong defense down the stretch to secure the win.
Â
Both teams shot 50 percent from the field for the contest with UWS going 30-for-60 and BU 28-of-56. Bethel controlled the glass for a 38-24 advantage there.
Â
Doely and Mast led Bethel with 17 points apiece while Jensen registered 16. Doely completed a double-double with 11 boards and swatted five UWS shots.
Â
UWS returns to action next Saturday at 1 p.m., at St. Norbert.
