Hektor Shines in 3-1 Yellowjacket Win Over Marian

Fond du Lac, Wis. – The Marian University Sabres have been a nemesis for the Yellowjacket men's hockey team for a long time. The Yellowjackets won the first two meetings between the programs, dating back to October 2000. The teams didn't play again for a decade, but when they met on November 27, 2009, the Yellowjackets again emerged the victor.

Since that time, however, it has been all Marian.

The Yellowjackets came into Friday's game against Marian with a 0-6-3 record in the last nine meetings between the teams, including going 0-3-2 since Rich McKenna became head coach. In addition, the Yellowjackets had never won a game on Marian's home ice.

In other words, a win Tuesday would not only put the Yellowjackets back on a winning track, but it would also put an end to a lot of streaks.

The Yellowjackets scored once in each period Tuesday, and rode the stellar goaltending of senior Myles Hektor (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) to a 3-1 win over Marian at the Blue Line Family Ice Center.

Hektor, who took a beating in his first two starts of the season, was electric in goal Tuesday, making 39 saves, including 14 in the third period, on the way to his first win of the season.

Marian was called for a penalty off the opening faceoff, and the Yellowjackets made them pay with an early goal. Bradley Stonnell (Surrey, British Columbia/Tamanawis Secondary School) took a shot from the left point that Marian goaltender Colby Muise stopped, but Reed Stark (Suffern, N.Y./Douglas County West) cleaned up the rebound in the left circle and beat Muise on the glove side for his third of the year just 1:54 in.

It stayed that way until the early stages of the second period. The Yellowjackets won a faceoff in the Marian zone, and Charles Martin (Blainville, Quebec/École internationale Lucille-Teasdale) sidestepped a defender at the right point, skated into the right circle and picked his corner from there, scoring his first of the year to make it a 2-0 game.

Third periods have been tricky for the Yellowjackets of late, and this one was no exception. Down a pair of goals, Marian pressed hard in the third and cut the Yellowjacket lead in half with a goal on a wrap around at 12:39.

The Yellowjackets answered, however, a few minutes later on the power play. Colton Friesen (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Dakota Collegiate) sped into the Marian zone on the left wing and made a perfect feed across the slot where C.J. Walker (Boise, Idaho/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) tapped home his fourth of the year, making it 3-1 with 3:36 remaining in the third.

Marian continued to press the rest of the way, and got Muise out for an extra attacker, but Hektor shut the door to preserve the win.

The Yellowjackets were outshot 40-35 in the game, including 15-8 in the third period.

The Yellowjackets are back home Friday, when they open a two-game weekend series against Northland. The opening faceoff is set for 7:05 p.m. at Wessman Arena.
