Women’s Basketball Outlasts Martin Luther, 59-42, to Win Second Straight

NEW ULM, Minn. -- The UW-Superior women's basketball team limited Martin Luther to 25.9 percent shooting, pulling away in the fourth quarter, in a 59-42 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference victory at Luther Student Center on Saturday.

Sophomore Elise Besonen (Ewen, Mich./Ewen-Trout Creek) scored a game-high 12 points and senior Kaelyn Christian (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville Senior) added 11 points, five rebounds and two assists to help the Yellowjackets even their overall record to 4-4 and stay unbeaten in the UMAC at 2-0 with the win.

Superior led, 16-10, after the first quarter, and 33-18 at halftime, before Martin Luther found its way back into the game with a big third quarter. The Knights outscored UWS 18-11 in the period, creeping to within 44-36 to begin the final stanza. The Yellowjackets, though, got five points and seven of her game-best 11 rebounds from senior Mady Sanders (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) in the fourth.

MLC (4-5, 0-2) cut the UWS lead to 44-38 with a Lauren Paulsen jumper early in the quarter, but UWS used a 10-3 stretch from there to provide separation. Junior Bryton Kukowski (Duluth, Minn./Hermantown) converted a layup with just under four minutes to play for a 54-41 lead.

Sanders scored the 'Jackets' final five points of the game, including a layup with 57 seconds left, for the final margin.

Coming off of a career-high 18 points Friday at Bethany Lutheran, sophomore Katie Dobson (Black River Falls, Wis./Black River Falls) contributed eight points and six rebounds.

Lydia Feidt and Emma Nelson paced the Knights with 10 points apiece and Paulson grabbed eight rebounds.

UW-Superior returns to action after the break, hosting the 2022 Superior Shootout Holiday Classic Dec. 30 against St. Catherine. Game time is 6:30 p.m., at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.
