Pointers Edge Yellowjackets in Overtime, 3-2

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – All good things must come to an end, or so the saying goes.

The Yellowjacket men's hockey team had a lot of good things going entering play Saturday against UW-Stevens Point. The 'Jackets were riding a four-game winning streak. They hadn't allowed a goal in over 187 minutes of game play, a school record. They hadn't lost a game when leading after two periods. The penalty kill hadn't allowed a goal in a month, a span of 37 straight shorthanded chances.

And all of those came to an end during the final five minutes of play Saturday.

Stevens Point scored three times in the final three minutes of regulation and completed the comeback in overtime, erasing a two-goal deficit to defeat the Yellowjackets 3-2 Saturday at K.B. Willett Arena.

Dawson Sciarrino netted the overtime winner for the Pointers, making a great fake and sliding the puck past Yellowjacket goaltender Myles Hektor (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) with 1:53 to go in the extra session. Hektor finished the game with 41 saves for the Yellowjackets, 35 of which came in the last two periods and overtime.

Things got off to a great start for the Yellowjackets, as they came out with their foot on the gas and controlled the play for much of the third period. On an early power play Reed Stark (Suffern, N.Y./Douglas County West) scored his fifth goal of the season snapping a shot from the right circle off the post and in to make it 1-0 just 5:10 into the game. MacGregor Sinclair (Irma, Alberta/Irma School) and Charles Martin (Blainville, Quebec/École internationale Lucille-Teasdale) assisted.

It stayed that way until the beginning of the second period. Sinclair won the faceoff and Martin moved the puck ahead to C.J. Walker (Boise, Idaho/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) who drove the net and lifted a backhand over the glove of Pointer goaltender Ryan Wagner for his fifth of the year just eight seconds into the middle frame.

After that goal, however, Stevens Point came alive and kept the Yellowjackets at bay, hemming them in their own zone for long stretches, but Hektor stopped everything the Yellowjackets didn't block and preserved the 2-0 lead.

In the third the Yellowjackets seemed to find their footing and had stretches where they carried the play. A redirection early in the period that would have extended the Yellowjacket lead hit the crossbar, and the score stayed 2-0.

Late in the third the Yellowjackets went shorthanded, and halfway through the power play the Pointers pulled their goaltender for a two-man advantage. Noah Finstrom deflected a shot from the slot past Hektor, making it 2-1 with 2:33 left in the period.

The goal snapped the Yellowjackets' string of successful penalty kills at 39 going back to the Nov. 4 game against Adrian. It also snapped the Yellowjackets' school-record shutout streak at 244:48.

In the final minute, the Pointers again pulled the goaltender and, with significant traffic in front of the goal, Evan Junker scored, tying the game 2-2 with 47.1 seconds to play, setting the stage for overtime, the first time in 2022-23 the Yellowjackets went to an extra session.

The Yellowjackets won the opening faceoff of the overtime and Sinclair carried into the Stevens Point zone. His shot from the left circle got past Wagner, but went off the goal post keeping game tied. It was the only scoring chance of the overtime for the Yellowjackets.

Shots favored the Pointers in the game, 44-18.

The Yellowjackets will close out the first half of the regular season Saturday, Dec. 10 when they travel to Ashland, Wis. to take on Northland College. The opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Bay Area Civic Center.
