Therrien's Late Goal Helps Yellowjackets Salvage 2-2 Tie With Saints

Story Links

SUPERIOR, Wis. – After a 1-2-0 start to the season on home ice, Yellowjacket head coach Rich McKenna made a radical decision – he was scrapping the team's white sweaters and moving back to the gold sweaters the team wore from 2017 through 2020.

The result was the Yellowjackets went on a mini tear, fashioning a record of 3-1-0 record at home heading into last night's game with Gustavus. After the loss to the Gusties, the Yellowjacket mentor went back to the home whites, hoping it would jolt his team back into the win column.

Well, the Yellowjackets didn't win, but they didn't lose either.

For the 13th time in 15 games the Yellowjackets scored the first goal of the game, but for the third time in four games they coughed up a lead in the third period, only to rally for a 2-2 tie against St. Scholastica Friday afternoon at Wessman Arena in the third place game of the 2022 Superior Showdown sponsored by Subway.

The game went in the books as a tie, but the Saints earned the third-place finish by taking the shootout 2-1. On the year, the Yellowjackets are now 9-5-1 overall.

After a scoreless first period St. Scholastica started the second on the power play. The Saints hit two posts on that power play, but the score remained tied. Then, 11 seconds after the penalty expired, team captain MacGregor Sinclair (Irma, Alberta/Irma School) scored his sixth goal of the year, taking a pass from C.J. Walker (Boise, Idaho/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) in the right circle and beating Saints' goaltender Jack Bostedt low to the stick side at 2:11 of the period.

It stayed that way until the first minute of the third period. The Yellowjacket defense lost track of their gaps and backed off a loose puck, giving Filimon Ledenkov too much room and his wrist shot beat Yellowjacket goaltender Dylan Meilun (Morden, Manitoba/Morden Collegiate Institute) on the glove side, tying the game 1-1 just 50 second into the third.

The Saints took their first lead of the day at 7:16 of the third when Alec Severson scored from the slot.

Late in the third the Yellowjackets began to press, and finally got their break to tie the score. Charles Martin (Blainville, Quebec/École internationale Lucille-Teasdale) made a great play to hold the puck in at the right point, and after settling the puck down Martin's wrist shot was tipped by Tristan Therrien (Prévost, Québec/Newbridge Academy) over Bostedt's shoulder, tying the game 2-2 with 2:43 to play in regulation. It was the fifth of the year for Therrien.

With just 1:28 to go in the third the Yellowjackets went on the power play, but they weren't able to convert, and the power play carried over to overtime. The Yellowjackets then got another overtime power play with 27.7 seconds left, but they again were unable to convert, and the game ended in a tie.

Saint Scholastica outscored the Yellowjackets in the shootout 2-1, with Conor MacLean (Wilcox, Saskatchewan/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) getting the goal for the Yellowjackets.

Meilun finished the game with 23 saves for the Yellowjackets, and his record for the year now stands at 7-0-1. At the other end, Bostedt made 32 saves for the Saints.

Both teams came into the game with penalty killing units well over 90 percent, and it showed as each team went 0-for-4 on the power play.

The Yellowjackets will now be off until Friday, Jan. 13 when they travel to St. Peter, Minnesota for a rematch with Gustavus. The opening faceoff from Lund Arena is set for 7 p.m.
