SUPERIOR, Wis. – Northwestern shot nearly 53 percent from the field, including 58 percent in the second half, topping the UW-Superior men's basketball team, 77-62, in the Yellowjackets' home finale Saturday at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium.
UWS (8-15, 4-8 UMAC) scored the first basket of the game and the saw the Eagles shoot lights out, connecting on 29-of-55 attempts overall and 10-of-22 from 3-point range to clinch at least a share of the league regular-season title with the victory.
UNW's Noah Alm scored 25 points with 14 coming in the first half, wile Henry Fahnbulleh poured in 11 of his 18 prior to halftime.
Sophomore
Joey Barker (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) came off the bench for a team-high 12 points in 19 minutes to pace the Yellowjackets while junior
Mason Ackley (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) added 11 points, five rebounds and three assists for Superior.
Northwestern outrebounded the 'Jackets, 40-21, earning 20 second-chance points with a 14-7 edge on the offensive glass.
After an Ackley jumper cut the deficit to 15-13, the Eagles (17-6, 11-1 UMAC) used an 8-1 run to open a 23-14 lead when Fahnbulleh completed a three-point play with 7:42 on the clock. Northwestern led, 39-28, at the break.
UNW maintained a double-digit cushion for the entire second half with the help of hot shooting from the floor. The visitors missed just 11 shots after halftime on their way to the victory.
Xavier Patterson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior),
Eli Vogel (Appleton, Wis./Appleton West) and
J'Vaun Walker (Rosharon, Texas/Manvel) each contributed seven points for UWS.
Superior closes the regular season next Friday and Saturday at Minnesota Morris and Crown, respectively.
