Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Finlandia Powers Past Yellowjackets, 75-51

HANCOCK, Mich. – Finlandia shot 54 percent from the field in the first half and made 5-of-7 from 3-point range on the way to a 75-51 victory over the UW-Superior women's basketball team at Paavo Nurmi Center on Tuesday.

The Lions (13-8) missed just 11 shots in the opening 20 minutes, building a 41-27 halftime lead, and didn't look back.

Freshman Allie Zimmer (Waconia, Minn./Waconia) paced the Yellowjackets with 11 points off the bench, while junior Mady Sanders (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) grabbed 10 boards, for her third double-digit rebounding effort of the season.

After a tight first quarter that left Superior (5-17) trailing, 19-16, Finlandia opened it up in the second and third periods. The Lions outscored UWS, 38-19, in the middle two stanzas.

Bailey Froberg scored 30 points on 8-for-12 shooting and was 6-for-6 from distance for Finlandia.

Seventeen 'Jackets saw the floor with 11 scoring points.

Finlandia bolted to a 7-0 lead early before UWS rallied to within 17-13 when Zimmer knocked down consecutive treys to make it 17-13 with 53 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

The Lions lengthened their lead to 32-18 with less than five minutes left in the half with a 13-2 run, capped by a Froberg 3-pointer. Another Froberg long ball with 1:37 to play in the third quarter pushed the lead to 20 for the first time at 53-33, and Finlandia led by as many as 30 points in the final minutes.

Finlandia scored 27 points off of 18 Yellowjackets' turnovers and won the rebounding battle, 40-35.

Four UWS starters – Sanders, Sam Parendo (Proctor, Minn./Proctor), Elise Besonen (Ewen, Mich./Ewen-Trout Creek) and Paige Servais (Savage, Minn./Burnsville) – scored six points apiece.

Superior returns to Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play Friday at Minnesota Morris. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
