ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. – Sophomore guard
Josh Reinertsen (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) went 6-for-6 from 3-point range, pouring in a game- and career-high 18 points, to help the UW-Superior men's basketball team to an 81-63 victory over Crown in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference regular-season finale on Saturday.
Three Yellowjackets joined Reinertsen in double figures as UWS avenged a 32-point home loss to the Storm on Jan. 14 with the win.
Xavier Patterson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) and
Josef Fahrenholtz (Chatfield, Minn./Chatfield) each scored 12 points and
Joey Barker (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) added 11 points and eight rebounds. Fahrenholtz just missed a double-double for the second consecutive game, collecting nine boards.
UWS shot 60.7 percent in the second half, missing just 11 of its 28 tries, to pull away. Superior improves to 10-15 overall and 6-8 in the league while evening its record away from Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium to 6-6. The 'Jackets are set to travel to Bethany Lutheran in the quarterfinals of the UMAC tournament as the No. 5 seed on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
The 'Jackets used an 11-0 run early in the second half to open a 20-point lead at 49-29, capped when Patterson took a feed from
J'Vaun Walker (Rosharon, Texas/Manvel) and converted a layup with 15:16 on the clock.
Crown (13-12, 9-5 UMAC) whittled the deficit to 55-43 with 10 minutes to play, but UWS pushed it back to as many as 27 points as Reinertsen's final triple made it 77-50 with 3:59 left.
Seth Royston and Cade Carroll paced the Storm with 12 points apiece. Royston also had nine rebounds.
Reinertsen's big day helped UWS outscore the Crown bench, 44-28.
