SUPERIOR, Wis. – The UW-Superior women's hockey team erupted for four second-period goals, erasing a 2-0 Northland lead, in a 5-2 WIAC tournament first-round victory at Wessman Arena on Wednesday.
The Yellowjackets (10-12-1), who went 3-for-4 on the power play and added their second short-handed goal in as many games, advance to face fourth-ranked UW-River Falls in the semifinals Saturday and Sunday at 2:05 at Hunt Arena.
After UWS spotted the LumberJills a pair of Karadyn Kiviaho goals at 2:55 and 10:01 of the opening period, respectively, the 'Jackets came roaring back. Freshman
Ella Reynolds (South St. Paul, Minn./South St. Paul Secondary School) scored her fourth goal of the season, unassisted, at 6:58 of the second period to get Superior on the scoreboard.
Jenna Curtis (Webster, Wis./Webster) scored her first of two goals on the night 2:37 later on the power play from senior classmates
Amanda Sergent (Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines) and
Jamie Davison (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna) to pull her team even, 2-2.
Tessa Jorde (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) scored her fourth – also on power play – at 13:47 of the period from
Katie Montrose (Byron, Minn./Byron) and Sergent to take the lead. Curtis the tallied her fourth while the 'Jackets were killing a penalty at 17:38.
Freshman
Emma Booth (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) notched her fifth at 8:48 of the third to close the scoring when she deflected a shot from the point by Montrose past Northland goaltender Soleil Arcambeault (43 saves). Reynolds picked up the second assist on the play.
After a shaky start,
McKenzie Whalen (East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks) rebounded to make 12 saves, improving to 6-10-1 on the season. Archambeault fell to 0-14-0 with the loss. Northland was 0-for-3 with the extra skater, taking two shots on the power play. UWS fired 12 shots on its four power-play opportunities.
In all, four Superior players posted multiple-point games.
Northland's season ends with a 1-24-1 record.
