RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The UW-Superior women's hockey team saw its season come to a close at the hands of fourth-ranked UW-River Falls, 6-0, in game two of the Wisconsi Intercollegiate Athletic Conference semifinals Sunday afternoon at Hunt Arena.
The Falcons (25-1-0) scored in all three periods, including two in the first and three in the third on the way to their 18th consecutive victory. UWRF advances to play third-ranked UW-Eau Claire Saturday in River Falls.
UW-River Falls, which received goals from six different skaters, wasted no time getting on the scoreboard just 1:20 into the game. Maddie McCollins scored from Sophia Leong and Kiana Gilbraith for the lead. Erin Olson made it 2-0 at 13:46 in the first period with an assist from Emma Schmitz.
River Falls added one in the second period off the stick off Aubrey Nelvin at the 12:23 mark, assisted by Allisen Carothersand Jessica Rubenalt, before putting the game away in the final frame with three goals in four minutes, 23 seconds.
Kora Torkelson scored from Callie Hoff and Alex Hantge at 8:12 of the period. Abigail Stow scored on the power play from Hoff and Torkelson at 11:33 and ReillySpringman closed the scoring from Ellie Brice and Kenzie Dunn at 12:35.
Senior goaltender
McKenzie Whalen (East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks) made 39 saves in her final game in the UWS net, while Sami Miller stopped 21 for the Falcons' second consecutive shutout.
Superior was 0-for-4 on the power play and River Falls was 1-for-4.
