AUBURNDALE, Fla. --Â The UW-Superior baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Brockport on Wednesday in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational, 21-2 and 7-0.
Â
The Golden Eagles (6-2) scored 28 runs and banged out 23 hits in the dominant sweep, setting the tone for the day by scoring 13 runs over the first two innings of the first game -- including eight in the top of the first. In all, Brockport scored in nine the 14 frames, taking advantage of a depleted UWS pitching staff.Â
Â
The Yellowjackets used four pitchers in the opener with
Jack Barnett (Jordan, Minn./Jordan) drawing his first start of the season and lasting just one inning. Barnett (0-1) was followed by
David Dibble (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper),
James Besaw (Oak Harbor, Wash./Oak Harbor) and
Dante Bender (Gurney, Wis./Hurley), who were no match for the potent Brockport lineup. Seven Brockport starters recorded hits and 13 players scored runs. Five more hitters drove in multiple runs with second baseman James Houlahan registering three RBIs atop the batting order.
Â
The Yellowjackets used 25 players, with freshman
Max Howell (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) driving in a pair of runs with a seventh-inning double down the left-field line to get his team on the scoreboard.Â
Â
The nightcap was more competitive after a four-run bottom of the first inning by Brockport. Freshman
Jack Rheineck (St. Louis Park, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's School) steadied the game in the middle innings in relief of
Isaac Fugere (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East), who threw the first two frames. Rheineck allowed just two earned runs and five hits with four strikeouts and one walk over the final four innings.Â
Â
Rheineck threw a pair of scoreless innings, but the 'Jackets' offense could not get in gear. Freshman center fielder
Jordan Trimble (Victorville, Calif./Grandview (Colo.)) went 2-for-3 to lead the way.
Â
Brockport's Jake Jempty (1-0) earned the win on the mound, going five innings. He struck out three and walked one, before making way for Keegan Jarvis and Zach Eldred out of the bullpen.
Â
UWS (1-8) is off Thursday and returns to the diamond Friday with a nine-inning game against Stockton at 3:30 p.m. CT.
