FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Freshman right-hander
Allison Luoma (Iron River, Wis./Northwestern) threw a three-hit, complete-game shutout and the UW-Superior softball team banged out 16 hits in a 19-0, five-inning victory over SUNY Canton at the Gene Cusic Classic on Friday.
The Yellowjackets earned a split on the day with the win over the Kangaroos after Oneonta scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to nip UWS (9-3), 5-4, in the first game of the day.
Game 1 -- Oneonta 5, UW-Superior 4
UWS built a 4-0 lead through two and a half innings before Oneonta scored once in the bottom of the third and tied the game at 4-4 with three more runs in the fourth. The Red Dragons plated the game- winning run with consecutive doubles with one out from Julia Serena and Megan Palmatier in the bottom of the seventh.
Kaela Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) walked, stole second and third and scored on a wild pitch for a quick 1-0 in the top of the first.
Zoe Thomson (Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson) then gave the 'Jackets a 3-0 lead with a one-out single to right-center field that scored
Ellie Macal (Winona, Minn./Cotter) and
Tayler Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights). Both reached on walks and stole second base.
Jessica Jacobson (Sturgeon Bay, Wis./Southern Door) extended the lead with a solo home run to left field -- her second in as many days -- on a 1-1 pitch.
Down, 4-1, in the fourth Sara Cartier hit a one-out double to left center, scoring two for the Dragons. Two batters later, Adriana Fiori hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game. That's the way it stayed until the last of the seventh inning when
Tayler Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) induced a fly ball for the first out. Serena followed with a double to left and Palmaier did the same for the win.
Thomson finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a walk to lead Superior's seven-hit attack.
Tayler Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) fell to 5-2 with a complete-game effort. She surrendered 10 hits, five runs (all earned with three walks and a strikeout in 105 pitches.
Candace Brennan (1-1) sniped the win in the circle, recording just one out. She followed starter Kathryn Davies, who went the first 2.2 innings and Angelina Scalere, who threw four frames.
Game 2 -- UW-Superior 19, SUNY Canton 0 (five innings)
UWS scored in runs in each of its first four at bats, including eight in the top of the first, making quick work of the SUNY Canton.

Norah Schmitz (Waconia, Minn./Waconia) drove in three runs to lead the offense.
Luoma improved to 3-1 on the season with six strikeouts and no walks in 64 pitches to help the 'Jackets to their fourth run-rule victory in Florida.
In all, 16 players scored runs and 13 had hits in the win.
Superior closes its spring trip Saturday with an 8 a.m. CT doubleheader against Central o Saturday in Naples, Fla.
