Yellowjackets Sweep Minnesota Morris; Run Winning Streak to 10

WEST ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The UW-Superior softball team ran its winning streak to 10 consecutive games with doubleheader sweep of Minnesota Morris in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference action at the West St. Paul Sports Center on Thursday.

The Yellowjackets scored 22 runs and banged out 21 hits on the day, beating the Cougars 17-2 in five innings in the first game and 5-2 in the second.

UWS sits at 19-5 overall and 6-0 in the UMAC with the victories.

Game 1 -- UW-Superior 17, Minnesota Morris 2 (five innings)
The Yellowjackets set the tone for the day with a 10-run first inning that featured 11 hits from 14 batters. Superior strung together hits in 11 hits I a 13-batter stretch in the inning, including a two-run single from Ellie Macal (Winona, Minn./Cotter), two-run double from Jessica Jacobson (Sturgeon Bay, Wis./Southern Door), RBI single by Lily Hanson (Cloquet, Minn./Esko), run-scoring double from Kaela Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights), RBI single by Tayler Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) and two-run double by Zoe Thomson (Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson).

UWS added three runs in the third inning and four more in the fourth to put the game away and bring it to an early end.

Tayler Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) allowed four hits and one earned run in four innings to improve to 11-3 on the season in the circle. She struck out three and walked three before giving way to left-hander Emma Pillion (Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa Township) in the fifth inning. Pillion surrendered one run on two hits in her inning of work.

Kaela Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights), Tayler Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) and Thomson tallied three hits apiece, with Macal, Jacobson and Hanson adding two knocks each. Kaela Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) scored a game-high four runs and swiped five bases in as many tries in the win. UWS stole nine in all as Hanson had two and Jacobson and Bryton Kukowski (Duluth, Minn./Hermantown) each had one.

Minnesota Morris starter Tori Nichols-Kraft gave up all 10 first-inning runs, only retiring two batters, before being relieved by Autumn Theis and Grace Penke.

Game 2 -- UW-Superior 5, Minnesota Morris 2
UWS again jumped on the Cougars early in the second game, getting all the offense it needed with five unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning. Three consecutive Minnesota Morris errors to open the inning gave Superior a 1-0 lead when Macal scored on a throwing error.

Kukowski scored on an RBI single to shortstop and stole second. With two out, the Cougars' Mollie Dummer hit Tayler Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) with a pitch to load the bases. Tiffany Kirk (McHenry, Ill./McHenry East) then lined a bases-clearing triple to left field for the 5-0 lead.

That's the way it stayed until Minnesota Morris (8-15, 5-5 UMAC) plated two in the top of the seventh off of Allison Luoma (Iron River, Wis./Northwestern), highlighted by a Theis RBI single.

Luoma (6-2) earned the win, scattering five hits, two earned runs and two walks while fanning four in 92 pitches for her sixth complete game of the season. Dummer fell to 6-6 giving up four hits and one walk with five strikeouts.

Kukowski collected two of the 'Jackets' four hits in the second game with Kirk and Thomson picking up the others.

Superior is back in action Tuesday at Crown in a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader.
