SUPERIOR, Wis. --Â Freshman designated player
Zoe Thomson (Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson) ripped a 1-1 offering over the left-center field fence in the bottom of the eighth inning for a walk-off grand slam as the UW-Superior softball team completed a dramatic sweep of Bethany Lutheran in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference action on Saturday.
Â
The Yellowjackets won, 4-1 and 5-1 for their second and third consecutive victories over the Vikings and first doubleheader sweep of BLC since taking a pair at NBC Spartan Sports Complex on April 23, 2016.
Â
UWS (15-5, 4-0 UMAC) has won six straight games overall.
Â
Game 1 -- UWS 4, Bethany Lutheran 1Â
Superior scored first in the opening game of the doubleheader, taking a 1-0 lead on a
Kaela Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) sacrifice fly that plated
Jessica Jacobson (Sturgeon Bay, Wis./Southern Door) with two out. Jacobson reached on a one-out error by the shortstop and moved to third on a
Bryton Kukowski (Duluth, Minn./Hermantown) single through the right side.Â
Â
After Kukowski stole second,
Olivia Bancroft-Hart (Cambria, Wis./Cambria-Friesland) walked to load the bases for the sac fly.
Â
UWS added three more in the bottom of the fifth for a 4-0 lead.
Tiffany Kirk (McHenry, Ill./McHenry East) started the rally with a one-out double to center field. After a Thomson walk,
Norah Schmitz (Waconia, Minn./Waconia) hit into a fielder's choice to short. The relay throw from Kaija Mork at second base was wild, allowing Kirk to score.
Â
Ellie Macal (Winona, Minn./Cotter) then lashed a double down the left-field line to plate Schmitz. Jacobson followed with a single to center, and, with Kukowski batting, Macal scored when BLC pitcher Alyssa Kosta uncorked a wild pitch.
Â
The Vikings (14-11, 3-2) got a run back in the sixth with a Mork sac fly, but
Tayler Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) kept BLC off the board in the seventh for the win.
Â
Tayler Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) went the distance for her 10th complete game of the season, allowing just an unearned run on six hits and two walks. She struck out three while throwing 105 pitches.
Â
The 'Jackets rapped out eight hits off of Kosta (4-3) who also did not surrender an earned run. She fanned two and walked five.
Â
Kaela Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) and Kirk each had two hits for UWS. Kraemer picked up an RBI to go along with her 31st stolen base of the season.
Â
Game 2 --Â UWS 5, Bethany Lutheran 1 (eight innings)
Freshman right-hander
Allison Luoma (Iron River, Wis./Northwestern) carried a no-hitter one out into the fifth inning of a scoreless game before being relieved by
Tayler Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights).Â
Â
Luoma, who kept the Vikings off balance with three strikeouts in 73 pitches on the day, was charged with the run that gave Bethany a 1-0 lead in the sixth -- a Mork RBI single.
Â
UWS knotted the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning on a Kirk RBI base hit up the middle with one out that scored
Kaela Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights).
Tayler Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) sacrificed her sister into scoring position.
Â
Neither team scored in the seventh, sending the game to extra innings.
Â
The Vikings got the lead off batter on in the top of the eighth with a single from Elizabeth Cizek, who then stole second. Kraemer, though, was able to avert trouble, getting two ground balls and catching a comebacker to end the inning.
Â
Kaela Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) lined a triple over the head of Haley Stockman in right field to open Superior's half of the eighth prior to
Tayler Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) walking and stealing second. Kirk was intentionally walked to load the bases to set the stage for Thomson's heroics.
Â
The home run was the third of the season for Thomson and gave UWS its first walk-off win of the year.
Â
Kirk had another two hits in the nightcap, finishing 2-for-3 with a double, walk and RBI. Kirk and
Kaela Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) were each 4-for-6 with two runs scored in the doubleheader.
Â
Tayler Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) threw the final 2 2/3 innings, scattering three hits, to pick up the win in the circle. It is the second straight doubleheader she has earned both pitching victories and improved 10-3 overall.
Â
The Yellowjackets play their final regular-season non-conference games Sunday with a doubleheader against Finlandia. First pitch at NBC Spartan Sports Complex is 1 p.m.
