MORRIS, Minn. -- Minnesota Morris shot nearly 54 percent from he field in the second quarter and held the UW-Superior women's basketball team to just six points in a 61-51 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference victory at Jim Court on Saturday.
Sophomore
Elise Besonen (Ewen, Mich./Ewen-Trout Creek) scored a game-high-tying 15 points on 6-for-13 shooting to lead Superior, but the Cougars used a strong second 10 minutes to take control of the game. UWS (5-8, 3-2 UMAC) held a 13-8 advantage through the first quarter, trailed, 26-19, at halftime and 46-24 entering the fourth quarter.
Sophomore
Katie Dobson (Black River Falls, Wis./Black River Falls) secured her first career double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds for UWS, while senior
Mady Sanders (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) had four points and nine boards. Freshman
Elsa Olson (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) contributed eight points in 17 minutes off the bench.
Minnesota Morris (3-11, 2-3) received 15 points apiece from Haley Wollschager and Jey Kwateh. Jadyn Sondrol chipped in 12 points.
Olson hit a 3-pointer with 41 second remaining in the first quarter give the Yellowjackets their largest lead of the day at 13-8.
A Shelby Mortensen jumper with 3:32 remaining in the half gave Minnesota Morris a 20-19 advantage. Wollschlager followed with a layup in transition after a steal by Mallory Anderson. Kwateh then stripped Sanders of the ball and went the other way for another layup and for the seven-point halftime margin.
The Cougars' lead grew to 12 in the third quarter when Anderson knocked down a free throw with 2:41 left.
Down, 53-43, with 3:50 on the clock, UWS made a run, scoring five straight poits on a Besonen 3-pointer and a pair of Dobson free throws, but that was as close as Superior would get.
The Cougars finished 21-of-52 (40.4 percent) from the floor and hit 18-of-23 free throws for 78.3 percent. Morris held a 40-36 edge in rebounding.
UWS returns to action against Northwestern at Mertz Mortorelli Gym on Friday at 7:15 p.m.
