NEW ULM, Minn. – The Yellowjacket women's soccer team traveled to the campus of Martin Luther to compete in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action. After a match where the 'Jackets scored 11 goals against North Central, the offensive momentum carried over to Saturday, specifically with sophomore
Kamryn Hill (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld).
The midfielder exploded on the pitch, scoring three goals in the second half of play to boost the Yellowjackets over the Knights 5-1.
Early on the Yellowjackets tested Knights goalkeeper Rebekah Schroeder. One of those Yellowjackets was senior
Niya Wilson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior), who after rifling four shots found the back of the net on the fifth, giving UWS a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute.
Business picked up in the second half, as the 'Jackets continued to deliver shots. Junior forward
Mya Holmquist (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo) took a shot in the 58th minute that came inches from going in net, but eventually secured her 14th goal of the season a minute later from
Erika Schneider (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West), extending the Yellowjacket lead by two goals.
During the 61st minute of play, Yellowjacket head coach
Allison DeGroot called for sophomore
Kamryn Hill (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) to enter the match, and her presence was made known just a minute later, scoring an unassisted goal to give UWS a 3-0. Hill wasn't finished, though, as she took a feed from
Taylor DeCook (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect) and capitalized again in the 66th minute.
Five minutes later Hill did it again, scoring her third goal of the match and second unassisted goal of the match to complete the hat trick and give UW-Superior a five-goal lead over Martin Luther.
Towards the end of the match the Knights would take a foul inside the box, creating a penalty kick opportunity. Emma Slayton took the kick and scored, breaking the shutout and cutting down the Yellowjacket lead to 5-1. That would cap the scoring in Saturday's match, giving UWS its 11th win in UMAC play.
The offensive charge was led by Holmquist who took nine total shots, while Wilson and Hill each fired five. In total, the Yellowjackets ended with 25 total shots and 16 on frame.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Quinn Clark (Duluth Minn./Duluth East) got the start in goal for the Yellowjackets, who made three saves and improved to a 4-3-1 record on the year.
The Yellowjackets are back in action Tuesday facing Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) foe UW-Stout. Kickoff is slated for a 5 p.m. start at Nelson Field in Menomonie.
