SAINT PAUL, Minn. – The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) announced its awards for the week of Oct. 16-22, and the Yellowjackets swept the offensive honors in men's and women's soccer.
Â
Phillip Eriksen (Skjetten, Norway/Lorenskog) was named the UMAC Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while
Niya Wilson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) received the same award on the women's side. It was the first time this season that either Eriksen or Wilson was honored.
Â
Eriksen endured a tough start to the 2023 season but has come on of late. Last week he helped spearhead a Yellowjacket offense that scored 10 goals in three matches, as the Yellowjackets went 2-1. After missing Tuesday's match with Macalester, Eriksen returned to score a pair of goals in 43 minutes as the Yellowjackets shut out North Central 6-0 in a downpour at home. He followed that performance up by scoring twice in Saturday's 3-0 win at Martin Luther, a victory that gave the Yellowjackets a stranglehold on the UMAC standings.
The Yellowjackets will be at home Tuesday when they host Northland at 7:30 p.m. at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex. With a win over the LumberJacks, the Yellowjackets will win the UMAC regular season title outright. A draw would clinch a share of the UMAC championship.
Â
Wilson had another week where she did what she always does – scored goals. The all-time leading scorer in UW-Superior women's soccer history netted four goals as the Yellowjackets went 2-0 in UMAC play and neared a clinch of the third straight UMAC regular season title for the program. Wilson scored three goals – her fifth collegiate hat trick, as the Yellowjackets rolled over North Central 11-0 Wednesday. Her first goal of the match was the game winner. She followed that up with another goal in the Yellowjackets' 5-1 win at Martin Luther Saturday.
Like the Yellowjacket men, the women's soccer team is on the cusp of claiming the UMAC title. The Yellowjackets will be home Wednesday when they host Northland at 7:30 p.m. at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex. With a win over the LumberJills, the Yellowjackets will win the UMAC regular season title outright. A draw would clinch a share of the UMAC championship.
