BECKER, Minn. – For the Yellowjacket women's golf team, and the bulk of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) for that matter, there wasn't a lot of drama heading into the final day of play at the 2023 UMAC Championships.
The Yellowjackets entered the final day of play firmly entrenched in the No. 3 position, trailing second-place Crown by 20 strokes while leading fourth-place Minnesota Morris by 56. And when the dust settled on the action, there was very little movement among the ranks, and the Yellowjackets brought home a third-place finish from the conference tournament.
Northwestern led the event wire-to-wire, claiming the conference championship by a comfortable 97 strokes over Crown. Northland leap-frogged over Minnesota Morris to take fourth place, with Morris rounding out the top five.
Martin Luther, Bethany Lutheran and North Central finished sixth, seventh, and eighth, respectively.
Leading the way for the Yellowjackets once again was
Ashton Parnell (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti). As she's done all season, Parnell was the top shooter for the Yellowjackets on the weekend, finishing in a tie for sixth place with a three-day total of 265. Parnell shot an 89 Thursday and improved by three strokes, shooting an 86 Friday. Saturday was her toughest round of the weekend, as Parnell shot a 90.
Olivia Weyenberg (Stacy, Minn./North Branch Area) finished just outside the top ten, placing 11th with a three-day score of 282. After shooting rounds of 91 and 96, Weyenberg carded a 95 in the final round.
After a rough second round that saw her shoot a 103,
Karin Hill (Duluth, Minn/Denfeld) found her game Saturday, shooting a 95 to finish the tournament with a 296, which was good for 15th place. Nipping at her heels was
Kenzie Tuura (Iron River, Wis./Northwestern), who shot consistently throughout the weekend. After carding rounds of 100 in each of the first two rounds, Tuura shot 99 Saturday to finish with a 299, putting her one slot behind Hill.
Rounding things out for the Yellowjackets was
Claudia Curtis (Lake Mills, Wis./Lake Mills). The freshman carded her lowest score of the weekend Saturday, shooting 102 to finish with a three-day score of 324, placing her 23rd.
Morgan Eckman of Northwestern was the individual medalist, claiming the conference title with a score of 245. She won the event by two strokes over teammate Paige Johnson.
The UMAC Championships closes out the fall portion of the schedule for the Yellowjackets. They will resume play in the spring in events that are to be determined.
