SUPERIOR, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-Supeiror and Yellowjacket Athletics have announced the schedule for the 2022 Yellowjacket Week of Giving. Now in its eighth year, the Yellowjacket Week of Giving is a week where UW-Superior student-athletes, coaches, and support staff dedicate time to an array of projects benefiting the community.

"This week is always one of the high points for our department during the academic year. Over the years, our student-athletes, led by our Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, have really taken ownership of this week with the hopes of making an impact across multiple parts of the community," said UW-Superior director of athletic communications Jon Garver. "Our department has always understood the role we play in the community, and the student-athletes understand the support they receive from the community. This is just a small way for us to return some of that support."

The headline event of the week will once again be the ever-popular Caroling for Cans. Each year, Yellowjacket student-athletes go out into various neighborhoods around Superior, going door-to-door, singing carols in exchange for non-perishable food items. The collection is then donated to the food shelf at St. Vincent de Paul in Superior. In 2022, the Caroling for Cans event yielding a record 1,237.9 pounds of food and $678.20 in cash.

"Our student-athletes are competitive by nature, so no doubt they are going to be shooting to beat those numbers this year," Garver said.

A change from previous years is Caroling for Cans will now take place on Monday of the Week of Giving, instead of its tradition Thursday slot.

Other activities will include gift wrapping to benefit the families on the UW-Superior Giving Tree through the Veteran and Non-Traditional Student Center (VNSC), bell ringing for the Salvation Army and presenting cards of appreciation to the faculty and staff on the UW-Superior campus.

And once again in 2023, Yellowjacket Athletics will be teaming up with the Superior Fire Department to collect toys for its annual Toys for Tots drive. Fans coming to any Yellowjacket home game during the Week of Giving are encouraged to bring a new, unopened toy that can be donated for the drive. Toy donations will also be accepted at the UW-Superior Athletics Office, located on the second floor of the Marcovich Wellness Center.

"We, as a department, understand the position we are in and know we have a unique ability to band together and do good for those in our community," Garver said. "We look forward to this week every year and hope those in our community will join with us and be generous to help our neighbors during the season."
