Big Second Period Pushes Augsburg Past Yellowjacket Women

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Yellowjacket women's hockey team returned home Saturday afternoon, looking to bounce back from their first loss of the season, suffered at the hands of Hamline Friday night.

The 'Jackets played their best hockey of the game in the third period Friday, and they were hoping the momentum built would carry over into Saturday's contest with Augsburg. The Auggies, who were off Friday, came in well rested and looking to pick up its first win of the year.

After a close first period, Augsburg exploded with a five-goal second period on the way to an 8-1 win over the Yellowjackets Saturday at Wessman Arena.

The Yellowjackets (2-2-0, 0-0-0 WIAC) will now hit the road for their next three games.

Augsburg opened the scoring at 4:35 of the first period when Nora Stepan placed a perfect shot just under the crossbar to make it 1-0. It went to 2-0 at 13:37 when Ella Olson scored her first goal of the day.

The Yellowjackets cut the lead in half at 16:43 of the first period, and it was the two goal scorers from Friday that combined on the tally. Libby Kamp (Bloomington, Minn./Holy Family) started the play, getting the puck to Kaylin Garner (Anchorage, Alaska/Chugiak) who ripped a shot off the post. Jenna Hoops (Woodbury, Minn./Visitation School) got the rebound and banged it home for her third goal of the year, making it 2-1. Hoops now has goals in three straight games for the Yellowjackets.

In the second period, Augsburg, fueled by its play on special teams, took control of the game.

Emily Schoeberl scored a shorthanded goal at 7:16, and just over a minute later Kennedy Stein scored to make it 4-1. Later in the period Augsburg scored three times in a span of 1:59 to blow the game wide open. Tenley Stewart scored on a power play at 15:59, followed by an even strength goal by Claire Jenkins Coffman at 16:36. Olson then scored her second of the game on the power play at 17:58, and it was 7-1 after two periods.

Augsburg closed out the scoring, just 1:14 into the third when Jenkins Coffman found the back of the net for the second time.

Rose Beeman (Minneapolis, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's School) made her fourth-straight start in goal for the Yellowjackets, making 22 saves through two periods. She took the loss and is now 2-2-0 on the year. Molly Black (Devils Lake, N.D./Devils Lake) came on in relief of Beeman and stopped 17-of-18 shots she faced in the third period.

For the game the Yellowjackets were outshot 47-20.

The Yellowjackets will be back in action Saturday, Nov. 11 when they enter Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play against UW-Eau Claire. The opening faceoff is set for 2 p.m. at the Hobbs Ice Center in Eau Claire.
