Women’s Soccer Secures Third Consecutive UMAC Championship

Story Links

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Yellowjacket women's soccer team scored three goals on Saturday on their way to clinching a third-straight Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) championship Saturday.

Despite not scoring in the first half, the Yellowjackets were on the offensive early, tallying eight shots to the Eagles' one. Senior Allison Alessi (Shakopee, Minn./Prior Lake) rifled the first shot on goal that Eagles goalkeeper Samantha Hansen corralled. Hansen wouldn't see another shot on goal from the Yellowjackets for another 30 minutes, this time coming from Brynne Crystal (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata). For the Eagles, their lone shot came from Megan Moeller that Yellowjacket junior goalkeeper Jenna Lang (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) saved.

Just five minutes into the second half, the Yellowjackets broke the tie with a goal from the all-time leading goal scorer, senior Niya Wilson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior). She would take a feed from Mya Holmquist (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo) and dribble past a defender and flicked a right foot shot, sneaking past Hansen and giving UWS a 1-0 lead.

Just under twenty minutes later, the Yellowjackets would find the back of the net courtesy of Holmquist. She found the back of the net via a corner kick from Lindrey Schendel (Firestone, Colo./Skyline), boosting the 'Jackets' lead to two goals.

The final goal for UWS came from Wilson, who took a right foot shot and found the left corner of the goal for her second of the match, 26th on the season and 68th of her Yellowjacket career.

UW-Superior fired 16 shots with eight on frame, while Northwestern took seven shots with four on target. Lang ended her afternoon with four saves, carding another shutout. Hansen would save five.

With today's win, the Yellowjackets have advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third-straight season. Their opponent will be announced during the NCAA selection show Monday at 12:30 p.m.
