MOORHEAD, Minn. – The semester break is coming at a good time for the Yellowjacket women's hockey team.
Back on Nov. 17, the Yellowjackets tied Northland, and the next day bounced back with an impressive 5-1 win at UW-Stevens Point. They went into the Thanksgiving break riding high, following a 3-2 win over St. Scholastica on home ice. That win left them unbeaten in three games and one game over the .500 mark.
Since then, however, it has been a different story.
Following the Thanksgiving break times have been tough for the Yellowjackets. They entered play Saturday, looking to win on the road at Concordia and not only salvage a split of the non-conference series, but also end a lengthy losing streak.
Things didn't go according to plan for the Yellowjackets, and they'll now enter the break on a five-game skid following a 7-3 loss to Concordia Saturday at the Moorhead Spots Center.
The Yellowjackets (4-8-1, 1-1-1 WIAC) will now have almost three weeks off before returning to the ice in the new year.
Saturday's tilt started off great for the Yellowjackets, as
Jenna Hoops (Woodbury, Minn./Visitation School) scored an unassisted goal on the power play just 2:47 into the game to put the Yellowjackets in front. It was the fifth goal of the season for Hoops.
Just under 10 minutes later the Cobbers tied it on a goal by Taylor Severson. They would take the lead for good at 15:56 of the first period on a goal by Jerica Friese, and after one period Concordia led the Yellowjackets 2-1.
In the second period Grace Doerring scored on a power play to extend the Concordia lead at 3:19. The Cobbers would get a goal from McKenzie Oelkers at 9:30 and another from Friese at 9:54 to make it a 5-1 game. That spelled the end of the day for Yellowjacket starting goaltender
Molly Black (Devils Lake, N.D./Devils Lake), who was lifted after allowing five goals on 15 shots.
Paige Hanson scored at 2:39 of the third period to make it a 6-1 Concordia lead. The Yellowjackets broke the Cobbers' scoring string at 7:53 of the third when
Ashton Parnell (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) scored her third of the year to make it 6-2.
Emma Booth (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) and
Gaby Andreacchi (Thunder Bay, Ontario/St. Patrick) assisted on the third goal of the season for Parnell, who earned her fourth point of the week after assisting on all three Yellowjacket markers Tuesday at St. Scholastica.
Less than five minutes later the Yellowjackets struck again. This time it was
Kailey Swerhun (Thunder Bay, Ontario/St. Ignatius) doing the damage, as she scored an unassisted goal while shorthanded to make it a 6-3 game.
Concordia closed out the scoring in the final minute on a goal by Lila Lanctot, making the final 7-3.
The Yellowjackets outshot Concordia 27-22 in the game. Black, who was tagged with the loss, fell to 0-2 after making 10 saves.
Rose Beeman (Minneapolis, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's School) came on in relief for the Yellowjackets and finished the game with five saves on seven shots.
Next up for the Yellowjackets is a meeting with Marian Friday, Jan. 5. The opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m. at Wessman Arena in Superior.
