DE PERE, Wis. – After suffering a loss against the University of Dubuque on day one of the Nicolet National Bank Holiday Tournament, the Yellowjacket men's basketball team saw themselves in the consolation game against Olivet. After a big game out of senior
Josef Fahrenholtz (Chatfield, Minn./Chatfield), his offensive output led the Yellowjackets to a 67-58 victory against the Comets.
Olivet began the scoring with a layup courtesy of Conner Schipper and a three pointer from Brayden Wine. Fahrenholtz would get his first points of the game with a shot from downtown, and later would repeat to bring the 'Jackets within one at 7-6. Fahrenholtz was responsible for the Yellowjackets' first 13 points of the game as they took the lead at 13-9.
Olivet would attempt to rally, but Fahrenholtz along with
Joey Barker (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior),
J'Vaun Walker (Rosharon, Texas/Manvel) and
Andrew Kunelius (Caledonia, Minn./Caledonia) would contribute the majority of Yellowjacket points in the first half, propelling them to a 38-29 lead heading into halftime.
The Comets came out of the break and came within two, but a jumper from
Joey Barker (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) and a fastbreak layup from
Andrew Beers (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) would see the lead remain with the Yellowjackets. Fahrenholtz would draw a foul from Olivet's Nolan Finkbeiner and drain his two free throws, but Noah Wiswary completed a layup to trail by only two at 45-43.
Action would continue as both teams would trade points, but a key steal-and-score from
T.J. Moberg (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) would keep a three-point lead in favor of UWS. Fahrenholtz continued his hot shooting with a combination of free throws and jumpers within the arc which ultimately brought the Yellowjackets to a 60-54 lead.
As time dwindled off the scoreboard, the Comets were forced to foul, leading to Moberg and Barker sinking both of their free throw opportunities before the Yellowjackets would secure the 67-58 victory on the road.
Fahrenholtz capped his evening with 35 points, besting his career-best of 31 points, a feat he conquered earlier this season against Buena Vista on Dec. 5. He also picked up nine rebounds on the evening, which earned him a spot on the Nicolet National Bank Holiday All-Tournament Team. Barker finished his evening 12 points and seven rebounds.
Olivet was paced by Conner Schipper, who scored 14 points and grabbed 10 boards. Nathan Richardson and Aden Hathaway each contributed ten points throughout the game, as well.
The Yellowjackets snapped a four-game losing streak Saturday, giving them momentum before resuming Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action Saturday as they face Northland. Tipoff inside the Mertz is set for 4:45 p.m.
