SUPERIOR, Wis. – Day two of the Superior Shootout Holiday Classic commenced Saturday, which began with the UW-La Crosse Eagles defeating the Sabres from Marian University by a 68-54 decision. The Yellowjackets, who won their first game Friday would have a date with the Green Knights of St. Norbert College, who lost by just four points to the Eagles.
Â
The Yellowjackets struck first, courtesy of
Elise Besonen (Ewen, Mich./Ewen-Trout Creek) with a layup. St. Norbert would come up with a pair of steals and counter for a 6-2 lead before
Erika Mattson (Ely, Minn./Ely Memorial) drained a three pointer off a feed from
Charlotte Ferstl (Plain, Wis./River Valley). Joining the scoring party was
Chloe Peterson (Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson) with a layup before the Green Knights would control the offensive game, capping the first quarter with a 20-13 lead.
Â
Scoring would come at a minimum during the second quarter, but the 'Jackets received two points courtesy of
MyKenzie Leccia (Somerset, Wis./Somerset) who drew a foul from St. Norbert's Emma Morrisey. Both the Green Knights and Yellowjackets picked up turnovers early on but were unable to capitalize.
Â
St. Norbert would add to their lead before Leccia hit a shot from downtown, as the Yellowjackets would trail 27-19. Green Knight Taylor Thiry notched a jumper inside the arc with under a minute to go to allow for a 10-point lead going into the break.
Â
After halftime, St. Norbert would continue their offensive attack, but Casey Jepson fouled Besonen, who would go on to drain her two free throws. Mattson would later hit another three-point shot before Leccia nabbed one of her own to bring the Yellowjackets within six at 33-27.
Â
The Green Knights would rally, however, to gain a 12-point lead. Later taking a foul from Kalina Winslow,
Elsa Olson (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) hit both free throws awarded, but Leccia would foul Winslow and finish both shots, ending the third with a 10-point lead of 42-32.
Â
The Yellowjackets received three points off a Besonen trey, who would be followed by Mattson and Leccia to cut back on St. Norbert's lead. The Green Knights rallied to a lead as high as 19 points, but
Hannah Hause (Stanley, Wis./Stanley-Boyd) would be sent to the line for two and would drain both. The same narrative would apply to Besonen just a minute later, but that would cap the scoring for the 'Jackets, as St. Norbert would secure a 61-46 victory.
Â
Leccia and Besonen led the scoring with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Mattson finished her afternoon with eight points and Olson capped the game with five. Leading the defensive efforts for the Yellowjackets once again was
Emily Dehler (Pierz, Minn./Pierz Healy), who grabbed 11 rebounds.
