SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Yellowjacket women's basketball team entered play Friday night looking to do something it hadn't done yet this year – win back-to-back games.
Â
The Yellowjackets had a win-on-lose-one thing going early in the year, and last week put an end to a two-game skid with a win over Lakeland. That victory meant a win over Crown in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) opener Friday would give them their first two-game winning streak of the campaign.
Â
And earn the win they did.
The Yellowjackets put their foot on the gas from the opening tip and never let up, defeating Crown 70-26 at Mertz Mortorelli Gym Friday.
Â
Elise Besonen (Ewen, Mich./Ewen-Trout Creek) led all Yellowjackets (4-4, 1-0 UMAC) with 15 points Friday, while
Elsa Olson (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) chipped in 10 points off the bench. The lopsided win allowed the Yellowjackets to play 17 players, with 11 scoring at least one point.
Â
The Yellowjackets trailed early Friday, but a pair of free throws from Besonen put them ahead 5-3 and they would never relinquish the lead. The 'Jackets scored the final six points of the first quarter, with five of them coming courtesy of Olson.
Â
In the second quarter the Yellowjackets padded the lead.
Chloe Peterson (Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson), who finished with nine points off the bench, hit a layup to increase the lead to 16. A three from Besonen put the Yellowjackets up by 20, and in the final minute she hit another three, increasing the lead to 36-13 heading into halftime.
Â
The third quarter is where the Yellowjackets put their stamp on the game, outscoring the Polars 17-3 in the frame. The Yellowjacket lead hit 30 points when
MyKenzie Leccia (Somerset, Wis./Somerset) finished a fast break with a layup. Leccia had eight points and added four more steals to her season total. When the buzzer sounded the 'Jackets led 53-16 after three.
Â
The bench got in on the act in the fourth quarter,
Colleen Claude (Centuria, Wis./Homeschool),
Hannah Hause (Stanley, Wis./Stanley-Boyd),
Hailie Evans (Proctor, Minn./Proctor) and
Kyra Latvala (Solon Springs, Wis./Solon Springs) all hitting the scoresheet as the 'Jackets closed things out.
Â
Charlotte Ferstl (Plain, Wis./River Valley) had five points to go along with a team-high 11 rebounds, while
Emily Dehler (Pierz, Minn./Pierz Healy) grabbed nine boards. In addition to her nine points, Peterson had seven boards.
Â
The Yellowjackets will be back home Saturday when they host Minnesota Morris. The opening tip is set for 3 p.m. at The Mertz.
