Yellowjackets Sweep, Stretch Win Streak to Four

NAPLES, Fla. – Don't let the new coat of snow in the Twin Ports fool you – it's softball season. Saturday the Yellowjacket softball team opened the Florida portion of its schedule with a pair of wins, and they were looking to keep things going Sunday, with two more games in The Sunshine State.

And with two days in the books, it appears the warm weather agrees with the Yellowjackets.

The Yellowjackets got solid pitching and plenty of offense in taking both ends of their doubleheader Sunday, defeating Westfield State 7-0 before invoking the run rule against St. Joseph's of Brooklyn with a 10-2 win.

With the wins, the Yellowjackets (6-2, 0-0 UMAC) have now won four straight and five of their last six.

Game One
Tayler Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights), the reigning UMAC Pitcher of the Week was on her game in the opener, mowing down the Westfield State lineup to the tune of four no-hit innings to start the day. The Owls didn't get their first hit until the fifth inning, and Kraemer gave up just two hits in pitching the shutout. Kraemer went the distance, struck out five, and lowered her earned-run average for the season to a miniscule 0.56.

The Yellowjackets gave Kraemer all the offense she would need in the top of the first, scoring four times to blow it open early.

Larissa Snyder (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park) led off with a bunt single and came in to score when Kraemer reached on a three-base error. Two hitters later Kraemer scored on a groundout. Ellie Macal (Winona, Minn./Cotter) tripled to bring in another run and she later scored on a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.

The 'Jackets added two more in the second. Snyder singled and scored on a Kraemer double, and then Kraemer came home on an RBI-single from Tiffany Kirk (McHenry, Ill./McHenry East).

It stayed 6-0 until the bottom of the sixth, when Kraemer scored on a sacrifice fly, making the final 7-0.

In addition to pitching a gem, Kraemer had another strong game at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI. Snyder also had two hits and two runs scored.

Game Two
The second opponent of the day, St. Joseph's of Brooklyn, is the same team the Yellowjackets took down in their second game Saturday, and they didn't waste any time jumping on the Bulldogs again in this one.

In the top of the first the Yellowjackets scored four times to again blow a game open early.

Kraemer started it with a one-out single, and she came in to score on Zoe Thomson's (Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson) single to right. Cassie Bergman (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) drove in Thomson with a single to center, and she and Jenna Hoops (Woodbury, Minn./Visitation School) scored on an error later in the inning.

The Bulldogs scored both their runs in the bottom of the second, cutting the Yellowjacket lead in half, 4-2.

That inning woke the Yellowjackets up in a big way, as they exploded for six runs in the top of the next inning.

Hoops led off with a double, Bergman walked and Samantha Swartz (Antigo, Wis./Antigo) reached on an error, bringing in a run and putting runners on the corners. Then, the Yellowjackets scored a few runs in a most-improbable way.

Morgan Young (Blaine, Minn./Blaine) pinch-ran for Swartz, and she went to second on a wild pitch. She then went to third and Bergman scored on a passed ball. Another passed ball brought Young home with the third run of the inning.

Following a pitching change, the Yellowjackets tacked on a few more.

Kraemer doubled to left, scoring Norah Schmitz (Waconia, Minn./Waconia) and MyKenzie Leccia (Somerset, Wis./Somerset), and then Kirk singled home Kraemer. When the dust settled, the Yellowjackets led 10-2.

That was more than enough for Emma Pillion (Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa Township). The sophomore pitcher went the distance in the circle, allowing two unearned runs on three hits over five innings, earning her second win in as many days. She is now 2-1 on the season.

At the plate four Yellowjackets – Snyder, Kraemer, Thomson and Schmitz all had two hits to lead the offensive attack. Kraemer, Hoops and Bergman all scored two runs in the game.

The Yellowjackets will play two more contest Monday, taking on Nazereth College of Rochester, N.Y. at 10 a.m. CDT and New York University of New York, N.Y. at noon CDT.
