Greenville Outlasts Yellowjackets, 6-5 in 11 Innings

Story Links

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – After a day off the Yellowjacket baseball team was back on the field Thursday, taking on Greenville University out of Greenville, Ill. The teams were scheduled for only one, nine-inning game Thursday, but they decided they needed to play a little more than just a standard game of baseball.

Each team scored a run in the ninth, forcing extra innings, where the Panthers got the run they needed to outlast the Yellowjackets, 6-5 in 11 innings.

With the loss, the Yellowjackets fall to 4-3 on the season.

It was a pitcher's duel early, with neither team being able to mount any sort of offensive threat. The Yellowjackets finally broke through in the top of the fifth to take the lead.

Christian Garcia (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) led off the inning with a base hit, the first hit of the game for the Yellowjackets, and he advanced to second base on an error by Greenville's pitcher. Brian O'Dwyer (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove Senior) followed with a single, scoring Garcia to put the 'Jackets up 1-0.

In the bottom of the seventh the Yellowjackets stretched the lead. Garcia again started things, this time with a one-out double. O'Dwyer and Sam McNosky (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle) were each hit by pitches, loading the bases. Nick Fredrikson (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Anthony Village) singled, and the ball got past the center fielder, going all the way to the fence, and clearing the bases, giving the Yellowjackets a 4-0 lead.

Riley Harbaugh (Banks, Ore./Banks) got the start for the Yellowjackets and was throwing extremely well, holding Greenville scoreless into the eighth inning. But that changed in a hurry, as the Panthers came back with a vengeance.

Greenville loaded the bases with nobody out, and by the time reliever Owen Santiago (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) recorded the third out, the Panthers had tied things 4-4.

In the top of the ninth Greenville pushed a run across with a sacrifice fly, giving them their first lead of the game. The Yellowjackets, however, came back to tie it in the bottom of the frame. Again, it was Garcia getting things started, drawing a walk to lead off the inning. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on Fredrikson's double to tie it 5-5.

Both teams went scoreless in the 10th, and in the top of the 11th Greenville manufactured a run to pull ahead, 6-5. In the bottom of the inning, Garcia singled with one out and got himself into scoring position, but Greenville's bullpen struck out consecutive hitters to close out the game.

It was a big game for Garcia, as he went 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Fredrikson also had a big game, going 2-for-2 with a walk and three runs batted in.

Harbaugh took a no decision in this one, allowing four unearned runs on eight hits over 7.1 innings. Reese Fleig (Washburn, Wis./Washburn) took the loss, after giving up the game-winning run. He allowed that one run on two hits in 1.2 innings.

The Yellowjackets will have a quick turnaround as their Florida swing continues Friday. They will play Simpson in a pair of seven-inning games. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Northeast Regional Park.
