SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Yellowjacket baseball team is in the midst of a very special stretch of baseball.
Â
After shutting out Martin Luther three times over the weekend, the Yellowjackets entered play Tuesday with a shutout streak of 30 innings, spanning four games. They looked to keep that streak, as well as a four-game winning streak alive as they hosted Northland Tuesday.
Â
In a game completed in a snappy one hour, 46 minutes, the Yellowjackets kept both streaks intact, defeating the LumberJacks 3-0 at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
Â
The Yellowjackets (16-11, 12-3 UMAC) have now won five games in a row, their longest winning streak since winning seven in a row between Apr. 26 and May 4, 2022. And with their fifth shutout in a row, the Yellowjackets haven't allowed a run in 39 innings, the longest such streak in program history.
Â
Sophomore
Riley Harbaugh (Banks, Ore./Banks) got the start on the mound for the Yellowjackets and completely shut the Northland offense down. The Oregon native didn't give up a hit to the LumberJacks until the leadoff hitter singled in the top of the sixth inning. Harbaugh allowed two hits over 7.1 innings and walked two while striking out seven. He got the win, improving to 1-2 on the year.
Â
The pitching and defense were equally as stingy on the other side, as Northland's Aidan Hernandez matched Harbaugh and the Yellowjackets scoreless frame for scoreless frame.
Â
In the bottom of the sixth the Yellowjackets were finally able to get to Hernandez. With one out,
Isaac Fugere (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) flew out to the warning track in left field, bringing home
Ben Rhodes (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) with the game's first run.
The Yellowjackets got some much-needed insurance in the bottom of the eighth inning. With one out and
Payton Steiner (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) on second, Rhodes singled up the middle to bring home the second run of the game for the Yellowjackets.
Christian Garcia (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) followed with a double to left field, plating Rhodes to make it 3-0.
Â
Northland put a pair of runners on in the top of the ninth, but the pitching and defense held to give the Yellowjackets the win.
Â
Rhodes and Garcia led the Yellowjackets with two hits each. The Yellowjackets outhit the LumberJacks 8-4 in the game.
Â
After Harbaugh's strong start,
Declan Higgins (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle) came out of the bullpen and pitched the final 1.2 innings to earn his second save of the season.
Â
The Yellowjackets will return to action this weekend, when they travel to the Twin Cities for a series with North Central. The teams will play a doubleheader Sunday at Reynolds Field, on the campus of the University of Northwestern in St. Paul, Minn. The opening pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
