NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. – The weather has played havoc on sports all spring. The baseball, softball, tennis and track and field teams at UW-Superior have all had multiple games and events postponed or canceled due to inclement weather. Tuesday, it was the men's golf team's turn, with their weather issues coming on the biggest of stages.
Originally scheduled to tee off at 12:35 p.m., the decision was made to change the event over to a shotgun start and move everyone to a starting time of 8:30 a.m. in an effort to get the first day of the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships in.
Despite the early start, there was still a long delay in the action Tuesday, making for a long day on the course to play 18 holes.
The Yellowjackets shot a team score of 336 and sit in a tie for 41st place following the first day of the NCAA Championships at Keene Trace Golf Club.
In order to make the cut following play Wednesday and continue competing in the championships, the Yellowjackets will have to jump over a number of teams and bring down their score.
Leading the way for the Yellowjackets on the first day was
Ian Bundy (Austin, Minn./Austin). The Yellowjacket sophomore had the lowest score of any Yellowjacket, shooting an eight-over 80. Bundy carded two birdies on the day and was largely able to stay out of trouble, playing only two holes above a bogey. He enters the second day tied for 158th.
Nate Burke (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) had a good round, finishing with a 10-over 82. Like Bundy, Burke only played two holes above bogey and also carded two birdies. Burke, who is tied for 184th, had a stretch where he played one-under par, with a birdie followed by four straight pars.
Right behind Burke was
Cody Stanisich (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert Senior). The lefthander finished the day tied for 193rd place after shooting an 11-over 83. Stanisich didn't card a birdie in the round and played just two holes above bogey. His best stretch came where he parred eight out of nine holes.
Charles Martin (Blainville, Quebec/École internationale Lucille-Teasdale), who paced the Yellowjackets with his strong play at the UMAC Championships got off to a tough start Tuesday. Starting on the 17th hole, Martin carded a 10, before settling down and playing at one-under over the next six holes. Martin found the going tough to close the round and finished the day at 19-over.
Rounding things out for the Yellowjackets was
Taylor Burger (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior). The Superior native had a difficult day on the course, not carding any birdies and par golf for just five holes. Burger finished the round with a 21-over 93.
Four teams played the round at par or better, with Saint John's leading the event after the first day at four-under. Illinois Wesleyan is second, one stroke off the lead at three-under. Rounding out the top five are Christopher Newport (two-under), Methodist (even par) and Piedmont and Oglethorpe, who are tied at one-over.
Brian Hanson of Emory and Bobby Beaubien of Illinois Wesleyan are tied for the lead after one day, each shooting a five-under 67.
The Yellowjackets are scheduled to open the second day of the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships at 8:35 a.m. The second round of the event will be played at Keene Run Golf Club.
