6/1/2023 10:40:00 AM

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Superior and Yellowjacket Athletics have announced the hiring of Ryan Castaneda as sports information specialist.

A native of San Pedro, Calif., Castaneda graduated from UW-Superior in 2022 with a bachelor of science degree in exercise science. He was a five-year member of the Yellowjacket baseball team, where he played primarily first base and designated hitter.

He spent the last year serving as an admissions counselor and assistant baseball coach at UW-Superior.

"First and foremost, I would like to thank Nick Bursik and the rest of the search committee for this incredible opportunity. I have developed a true passion for this field of work and I am thrilled to be able to stay at a university that is near and dear to my heart," Castaneda said. "There is a lot to be excited about in Yellowjacket Athletics right now and I'm excited to be a part of it."

Castaneda was a student worker in the athletics department at UW-Superior for four years, beginning as a volunteer working in hockey. He would progress into the role of lead student worker, and finally into a student supervisor role while sharpening his skills in all of the varsity sports UW-Superior offers. He is also deeply familiar with all of the auxiliary roles that come with the position.

"I am excited to be able to bring Ryan in as part of our marketing and communications team within the athletics department at UW-Superior," said Jon Garver, director of athletic communications for Yellowjacket Athletics. "Ryan was an invaluable member of our statistics team as a student and has a deep understanding of how we want to do things at UW-Superior. He has all of the tools necessary to have a long and successful career in this field."

Castaneda's first day with the athletics department will be Monday, June 5.
