SUPERIOR, Wis. – In March, for the second time in its history, the athletics department at the University of Wisconsin-Superior was awarded one of the Ethnic Minorities and Women in Sports grants from the NCAA. And following a national search, UW-Superior has announced Emma Peterson has been chosen as the grant's recipient and will begin her work with the athletics communications staff July 18.

"When we received the grant the first time, we geared the grant toward the generation of digital content, and everything the grant is intended for came to fruition. We hired two people and were able to help them advance to full-time employment in college athletics, all the while taking our digital content to new heights," said Jon Garver, director of athletic communications at UW-Superior. "This time around we are focusing on rounding out our sports information staff. We had a good pool of candidates to choose from, but at the end of the day Emma stood out above all the others and we are very excited for her to begin her work with Yellowjacket Athletics."

A Superior native, Peterson recently completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, where she worked under Nick Hoven, the assistant athletic director for media relations and sports information. She graduated with two degrees from UW-Eau Claire, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in business management and entrepreneurship in 2020 and a Bachelor of Science degree in marketing with an emphasis in analytics in 2022.

Peterson, a former hockey standout at Superior High School, also played five seasons with the Blugolds women's hockey team. In 121 games, Peterson scored 40 goals and added 40 assists for 80 points. A two-year captain for the Blugolds, Peterson was named All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) First Team in 2020 and 2021, while receiving all-conference honorable mention in 2022.

"I am honored and excited for be selected for this position and am extremely thankful for this opportunity," Peterson said. "I am thrilled to be back in my hometown and looking forward to representing UW-Superior and Yellowjacket Athletics."
