Yellowjackets Partner With 23rd Veteran for Cause Game Efforts

9/20/2023 9:32:00 AM

SUPERIOR, Wis. – UW-Superior Yellowjacket Athletics is excited to announce its cause game efforts for the 2023-24 athletic year.

This year, all Yellowjacket sports teams will be SalutingThose Who Serve, a cause effort designed to honor active and retired service men and women.

"Our cause efforts have become a tradition amongst Yellowjacket Athletics, and we are thrilled to be dedicating this year's cause to supporting active and prior service men and women," said UW-Superior Director of Athletic Nick Bursik. "This cause was chosen by our student-athletes, and we are thrilled to partner with our Veteran and Nontraditional Student Center and 23rd Veteran to raise awareness and support."

In lieu of admission at designated cause games, Yellowjacket Athletics will instead accept cash donations that will go to 23rd Veteran, a local organization founded to better the lives of service men and women, active and prior, when they return from duty.

In addition, limited edition apparel, dedicated to the cause efforts will be sold at games while supplies last. All net proceeds from the apparel sale will also benefit 23rd Veteran.

"I'm thrilled to learn that UW-Superior Athletics has chosen 23rd Veteran to be the beneficiary of their cause game efforts," said 23rd Veteran Executive Director Mike Waldron. "It's humbling to live in a community that is so generous to the local nonprofit organizations and have a university that truly cares about our service members and their quality of life after service."

About 23rd Veteran: 23rd Veteran offers a transformative 14-week program designed to support individuals living with trauma. Originating in the Twin Ports region, this initiative has been dedicated to assisting military personnel and veterans in the area since its inception in 2015. The need for such services is underscored by studies revealing that approximately 7,000 armed service members have tragically lost their lives in hostile environments since 9/11, while nearly 140,000 veterans have succumbed to suicide within the same timeframe. A recent 2023 survey demonstrated, among other impactful measures, that 95% of program graduates from 23rd Veteran's program reported experiencing an enhanced quality of life. If you know of anyone who may enjoy or benefit from 23rd Veteran's programs, please reach out to info@23rdveteran.org, or refer them to 23rdveteran.org.
