Felipe Oliveira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Soma), the Yellowjackets held on to earn a 1-0 victory over the Auggies, capitalizing on the penalty kick in the 67th minute.
Tensions were high from the first whistle, as both teams came out with a vengeance to earn a victory at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex. The Yellowjackets came out firing seconds after the whistle, as Oliveira fired a shot in the 23rd second, but Auggies goalkeeper Oscar Herrera thwarted any attempt of an early goal.
Despite no scoring in the first half, each team played with heightened levels of intensity and fought for possession throughout the 45 minutes.
After the intermission, Oliveira came out of the gates looking to strike, as he fired a shot just 90 seconds into the second half, but Herrera was there once again to make the save.
The Auggies had multiple opportunities to score off corner kicks, but the Yellowjackets defense held its own and kept the match scoreless, for the time being.
In the 66th minute the Auggies fouled the Yellowjackets inside the box, and it was none other than
Felipe Oliveira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Soma) who took the penalty kick and finally beat Herrera to bring the score to 1-0.
From there the Auggies went on the offensive, but thanks to key saves from the Yellowjackets defense and goalkeeper
Alex Paredes (Mequon, Wis./Homestead), Augsburg was unable to find the back of the net.
Paredes had a quiet first half, but his night picked up in the second half as Augsburg would rifle 14 total shots with five on target. Paredes finished his night with five saves and a clean sheet.
UWS was led by Oliveira who finished the evening with six shots, while
Freddy Watson (Wendover, England/Berkshire College of Agriculture) and
Phillip Eriksen (Skjetten, Norway/Lorenskog) tallied five of their own.
