ST. BONAFACIOUS, Minn. – Sometimes a win is more than a win.
That was the case Friday for the Yellowjacket volleyball team. On the road at Crown College, the Yellowjackets made quick work of the Polars, sweeping the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) match 3-0 in a snappy 1:06, and in the process giving
Lynne Deadrick her 300th win as the head coach at UW-Superior.
Â
The Yellowjackets (9-5, 2-0 UMAC) won the match by scores of 25-9, 25-16 and 25-22.
Â
Already the longest tenured volleyball coach and the all-time wins leader at UW-Superior, Deadrick added another milestone to her resume with the victory.
Â
In the opening set the Yellowjackets overwhelmed the Polars, jumping out to a quick 6-1 lead. The 'Jackets strung together multiple runs of three or more points and led 18-9 before closing the set out with seven straight points.
Â
The second set was back-and forth early, with both the Yellowjackets and Polars holding the lead. That changed when the Yellowjackets blew things open. Using a service ace from
Sidney Bader (Milltown, Wis./Unity) and a kill from
Sydney Smith (Milltown, Wis./Unity), along with a pair of Crown errors, the Yellowjackets went on a 4-0 run to move in front 9-8. Later, the 'Jackets had a pair of five-point runs to build a seven-point cushion, 20-13. That was more than enough and the Yellowjackets cruised to the second set win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Â
It looked like the third set was going to be a runaway for the Yellowjackets, as they won the first four points, but Crown had other ideas and not only closed the gap but overtook the Yellowjackets to lead 14-12. The lead grew to as many as three, 18-15, before the Yellowjackets found their footing. A kill by
Maiana Stark (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) got the Yellowjackets back on track. A run of Crown errors followed, and then a kill by Bader saw the 'Jackets move ahead 21-18. Crown kept it close, getting within a point multiple times, but the Yellowjackets proved to be too much. A kill by
Kaylin Plautz (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) got the 'Jackets to match point, and Bader ended it with an ace, making the final score 3-0.
Â
The Yellowjackets employed a balanced offensive attack Friday, with 12 different players registering at least one kill. Plautz was the one Yellowjacket to hit double figures, finishing the match with 10. Bader finished the match with seven kills, while
Ella Kapus (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine) ended up with five, a season high. As a team, the Yellowjackets attacked at a clip of .203.
Â
Lizzy Schmidt (Twin Lakes, Wis./Wilmot Union) (22) and
Colleen Claude (Centuria, Wis./Homeschool) (15) accounted for 37 of the Yellowjackets' 40 set assists.
Â
On defense
Lindsey Racine (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) posted a team-high 19 digs. She was followed by
Jenna Anderson (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) and Schmidt, who each had 12.
Â
The Yellowjackets return to action Saturday on the road, taking on Minnesota Morris in UMAC play. The opening serve is set for 1 p.m. in Morris, Minn.
